Hyundai Motors entered the micro-SUV segment with the all-new Exter on July 10, 2023. Launched at a starting price of Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the new model faces stiff competition from the Tata Punch. The Tata SUV currently enjoys high popularity in the Indian market. So, does the Exter has what it takes to give the Punch a tough fight? Let’s find out.

Sharing its powertrain options with the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, the Hyundai Exter offers both petrol and CNG fuel types compared to the Tata Punch’s petrol-only option. Both models offer similar levels of power output with the 2023 Punch having a slight advantage.
While the Tata Punch has a slight advantage on paper, it is the Exter that offers a more refined performance with its four-cylinder engine compared to the Tata’s three-cylinder unit. In addition, the 2023 Punch is yet to receive the CNG powertrain option despite being on display at the 2023 Auto Expo.
When it comes to design, both SUVs are unique in their own way. Both have upright profiles and feature prominent wheel arches and thick body cladding. However, the Punch looks more like a tiny Harrier, especially the front end, which truly works in its favour. The Exter, however, is distinct from all other Hyundai offerings, featuring rugged & boxy elements and H-insignia in its lighting system.
All-in-all, the Tata Punch looks more civilized that is likely to appeal to buyers of all ages. On the other hand, the Hyundai Exter’s sporty character might restrict it to a specific set of audience.
In regards to their size, both models are squared off in their dimensions. While the Punch is longer and wider than the Exter, the Hyundai offer more headroom and legroom thanks to the longer wheelbase and height.

In terms of interior layout, both cars take a vastly different approach.
The 2023 Hyundai Exter gets the same dashboard layout as the Grand i10 Nios. However, the new SUV gets an all-black theme and a digitized instrument cluster instead of Nios’ dual-tone theme and an analogue instrument cluster.
On the other hand, the Punch shares its overall cabin design with larger Tata models like the Harrier and Safari. The cabin features a dual-tone black & grey colour scheme.
But one common factor between the two models is the customisation on offer. While Tata is offering 3 unique packages, Hyundai is offering three highlight colours for the interior to match the exterior colour option.
Now, let’s dive into a detailed comparison of their features:
Both the Hyundai Exter and the Tata Punch come equipped with various features to enhance the comfort, convenience, and safety of their occupants. Hyundai Exter gets an 8-inch HD infotainment with a digital cluster, a voice-enabled smart electric sunroof (first-in-segment), a dashcam with front & rear Camera (first-in-segment), wireless charging, connected car tech and many more. On the contrary, Tata punch packs feature such as a 7-inch touchscreen, electric folding mirrors, climate control, cooled glovebox, rearview camera and more. Tata has also showcased the Punch with the sunroof at the recently concluded 2023 Auto Expo, however, there is no news when the latest iteration with the sunroof will be launched.
In a nutshell, both the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter feature distinct interior designs, blending ergonomics with innate functionality for a comfortable cabin experience. However, the Exter gets an edge when it comes to safety & feel-good features.

Tata Punch |
Rs 5.99 Lakh – Rs 9.42 lakh |
While Hyundai vehicles are often known for being priced slightly higher than their competitors, the Exter has been strategically priced to be highly competitive. The Hyundai Exter starts at an attractive price point of Rs. 5.99 lakh and goes up to Rs. 9.31 lakh (ex-showroom). Similarly, Tata has priced the Punch with a starting price of Rs. 5.99 lakh, reaching up to Rs. 9.46 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-end trim. This pricing strategy creates a neck-to-neck competition between the two cars, with both offering similar pricing ranges. Hyundai has successfully aimed to strike a balance by ensuring that the Exter is priced competitively, allowing it to effectively contend with the Tata Punch in the market.
Both cars offer a lot in terms of features and powertrains. It’s now a personal choice as to which design you like more.
