India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
All new fourth-generation Swift was launched by Maruti Suzuki with a lot of technological enhancements and mechanical upgrades. The Swift nameplate has been consistently bringing high sales but has been facing stiff competition from rivals like the Tata Punch. Punch has a long list of features making it a value-for-money product in the domestic market.
It is important to note that even though they are priced in a similar price bracket, the Swift is a hatchback while the Punch hails from the micro-SUV family. In this comparison, we shall find out how the two contenders compete against each other in the following aspects:

Prices |
New Maruti Suzuki Swift |
Rs. 6.49 lakh - Rs. 9.64 lakh |
Tata Punch |
Rs. 6.13 lakh - Rs. 10.20 lakh |
Starting at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs. 6.49 lakh, the new Suzuki Swift is dearer than its rival by Rs. 36,000. Between LXi to ZXi+ DT are nine other variants on offer that can be mated to a manual or AMT, LXi being an exception as it is solely offered with a manual gearbox. A CNG Swift range is expected later this year.
It is the ZXi+ DT trim where things get interesting as it will save you Rs. 56,000 more than the range-topping Punch variant.
Tata Punch’s base model is aggressively priced at Rs. 6.13 lakh and comes in 25 variants ranging from Pure to Creative Flagship, with 5 being CNG variants.

You may want to consider the Punch if your usual routes have rough patches or love going for offroad trails.
It remains to be seen how the changes in the former translate into real life. Watch this space for a review of the new Swift.

The India-spec Swift is yet to go for BNCAP testing so no comments on that yet.
Areas where the former misses out on are a cooled glovebox compartment, rain-sensing wipers and four additional airbags over the existing two. The Punch has also retained the title of the safest micro-SUV (5 stars in GNCAP) on sale in the country since its launch.

Maruti has equipped the new Swift with a new K-Series engine which makes over 80 horses and 111 newton metres of torque on the tap. Yes, the figures are much lower than the outgoing model but because one cylinder was deleted and a 12-volt mild hybrid system added, the combined mileage from the setup has gone up to 25.75 kilometres per litre. We have yet to calculate its real-world mileage so stay tuned for that.
With the Punch, it is the CNG variant that is the most fuel-efficient with a mileage of 20.09 kmpl. Performance takes a significant hit with this fuel at 72.5 hp and 103 Nm, respectively. In its pure ICE avatar, the Punch outshines the new Swift making 86.5 hp (+6.1 hp) and 115 Nm (+3.3 hp).
