Tata Motors has recently launched the facelifted Nexon EV, now known as Nexon.ev, at a starting price of Rs 14.74 lakh (ex-showroom). The updated compact electric SUV has undergone significant design changes, powertrain upgrades and new features, making it a more competitive offering against the likes of the Mahindra XUV400. Here, we have compared both these offerings to see how they stack up against each other.

Since length has no bearing on EV’s taxation, the Mahindra cars has extended the XUV400 to 4.2m in length, whereas the Nexon.ev remains a sub-4m offering like its ICE counterpart. In fact, the XUV400 surpasses the Nexon.ev in every dimensional parameter, save for the ground clearance.

- Both the Tata Nexon.ev and Mahindra XUV400 come with two battery packs
- Starting with the Tata EV, it gets a 30kWh (called Medium Range Version) 129PS/215Nm) and a 40.5kWh (called Long Range Version) battery pack options, with ARAI-tested claimed ranges of 325km and 465km, respectively. While both versions are powered by the same front-wheel-driven PMS motor, the MR trim generates an output of 127PS and 143Nm, whereas the Nexon.ev LR makes 144PS/215Nm
- On the other hand, the Mahindra XUV400 comes with 34.5kWh (EC variant) and 39.4kWh (EL variant) battery packs, both with identical motor setups (150PS/310Nm). However, their claimed ranges stand at 375km and 456km, respectively
- Going by the above specifications, the Mahindra XUV400 is slightly more powerful and torquier than both MR and LR versions of the 2023 Nexon.ev, which also makes it faster than Tata EV
- When it comes to range, the XUV400’s EC variant get a bigger battery pack than the Nexon.ev’s MR version, resulting in a slightly better range output. Things are opposite for their long-range versions

With the recent facelift update, the Tata Nexon.ev has gained host of new features, providing it an edge over the XUV400. Having said that, some deal breaking features of the Nexon.ev includes segment’s largest 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster with navigation display support, ventilated front seats, auto AC, rear AC vents, rear charging ports, JBL sound system, height-adjustable co-driver’s seat, dual-function turn indicators, electronic parking brakes, 360-degree camera, hill descent assist, traction control, blind-view monitor, front & rear parking sensors, and segment’s first vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) functionalities.
Features like automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, connected car tech, wireless smartphone charger, keyless entry with push button start, leather upholstery, cruise control, electric sunroof, height-adjustable driver’s seat, electrochromic IRVM, ISOFIX child seat anchors, multi-regen levels, ESC, hill hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring system and six airbags are common between the two EVs.

In terms of price, the 2023 Tata Nexon.ev’s mid-range model comfortably undercuts the Mahindra XUV400’s base model. At the top-end, the new Nexon.ev is slightly more expensive than the Mahindra’s EV but offers more features, safety tech and an overall premium experience.
