India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
Electric vehicles (EVs) have become a focal point in the automotive industry as the world transitions towards sustainable mobility. Tata Motors, a pioneer in the Indian electric vehicle market, continues to further strengthen its electric product portfolio.
The recent launch of the Tata Punch.ev introduces a new dynamism to the choices accessible to new car buyers in the country. This broader selection of options empowers consumers to choose an EV from a diverse range of variants, features, and prices.
Each of them presents unique advantages and disadvantages within their specific segments. Previously, the only option in the subcompact SUV segment was the Tata Nexon EV. In this article, we will explore the differentiation between the new entrant, the Tata Punch.ev versus the Tata Nexon EV, focusing on their features, price points, and available variants.
Tata Motors surprised one and all with the introduction of its latest offering, the Punch.ev. At an introductory price of Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom), this new model successfully places itself between the company's entry-level electric hatchback, the Tata Tiago EV, and the flagship electric SUV, the Nexon EV, within the brand's EV product portfolio.
In detail, the Punch.ev price starts from Rs 10.99 lakh going all the way up to Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom), presenting a significant cost advantage over the Nexon EV. In relation, the electric Nexon price ranges between Rs 14.74 lakh to Rs 19.94 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Punch.ev is being offered in a total of 5 variants, namely Smart, Smart+, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered+. In contrast, the larger Nexon EV comes in 6 different trims. They include Creative+, Fearless, Fearless+, Fearless+ S, Empowered, and Empowered+.
When it comes to exterior design, Punch.ev adopts Tata Motors' latest design language. The vehicle further comes underpinned by acti.ev architecture which will be the foundation for upcoming Tata models. Despite being a more compact four-wheeler, the Punch.ev shares a nearly identical front end resembling the Nexon EV.
Furthermore, the rear design also displays notable similarities between the two models. However, the distinctive connected brake light bar at the rear remains an exclusive feature for the Nexon EV. Both SUVs feature a connected LED DRL strip with a welcome and goodbye function up front. Another noteworthy distinction is the charging flap placement; the Punch.ev has it in the front, differing from the Nexon EV.
In terms of dimensions, Tata Punch.ev measures 3,857 mm in length, 1,742 mm in width, and 1,633 mm in height. Its wheelbase stands at 2,455 mm. In comparison, the Tata Nexon EV is slightly larger in size, measuring 3,994 mm in length, and 1,811 mm in width with a height of 1,616 mm. When we look at its wheelbase then it measures 2,498 mm.
The electric Punch offers a ground clearance of 190 mm, whereas the Nexon EV provides a better clearance of 205 mm.
Surprisingly, despite its compact size, the Tata Punch.ev outshines the Nexon EV in cargo space. The former offers a storage area of 366 litres compared to the latter’s 350 litres. This is attributed to the Punch.ev’s 14-litre front trunk (frunk), showcasing efficient utilisation of space.
The homegrown automaker has left no stone unturned in providing a comprehensive suite of features for both the Punch.ev and the Nexon EV. The electric vehicle variants of both models have been equipped with a more extensive array of features compared to their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, showcasing a more aggressive approach by the company.
Both the EVs are loaded up to the brim with features such as Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 4-speakers +2 tweeters, rain-sensing wipers, front USB charge ports, auto headlamps, smart key with push-button start, 12V front power outlet, auto fold ORVMs, multi-drive modes among many others.
The Tata Punch.ev comes equipped with a 35 kWh battery pack whereas the Tata Nexon EV is fitted with a 40.5 kWh unit. Both these vehicles are propelled by a single front axle-mounted motor.
Underpinned by Activ. ev platform, the former delivers a power output of 120 bhp with 190 Nm of peak torque. In comparison, the latter generates 23 more horses with an overall figure of 143 bhp with 215 Nm torque.
As for the electric range, the Punch.ev is said to provide 421 kms on a single full charge. Whereas when we look at the Nexon EV, then it can achieve 465 kms in one time.
