Tata Tiago EV Vs MG Comet EV - Which Car For First-Time Buyers?

In the ever-evolving realm of electric vehicles, it’s the entry-level ones that strive hard to make their presence felt on a budget. There’s no denying that the charging infrastructure has expanded but we still have a long way to go. That being said, government subsidies do help to some extent apart from advanced energy-dense batteries and fast charging technology.

On that note, the contenders for today are none other than the MG Comet and Tata Tiago EVs, the two most budget-friendly electric cars on sale currently. While Tata Motors does have a major chunk of the EV market share (74% in March), MG Motor occupied the second spot at 12% with 1,107 cars sold last month.

Tata Tiago EV vs MG Comet EV

Right off the bat, the MG Comet is nothing like any other car sold in this segment. MG went against the conventional body style with its boxy two-door design language and 12-inch wheels making it easily stand out. Measuring 2.9 metres in length, the Comet is the smallest in-production car of the current lot.

To put that into perspective, that’s even smaller than the Tata Nano. Cruising and making turns through the traffic is fairly easy, thanks to its 4.2-metre turning radius. Except for the base ‘Executive’ trim, the illumination bits are all LEDs and even the MG logo lights up. Projector headlamps and extended horizon front and rear connecting lights are again exclusive to the ‘Excite’ and ‘Exclusive’ trims.

In line with its ICE iteration, the Tiago EV carries forward the two-box design and looks the part. Length, breadth and height measurements for the five-seater are 3,769 mm, 1,677 mm and 1,536 mm, respectively. Halogen projector headlamps, hyperstyle alloy wheels and LED DRLs are all there.

There’s even an electric tailgate release button for operating the boot. A rear wiper is a bonus on the Tiago. You can buy this EV in colours including Pristine White, Daytona Grey, Midnight Plum and Signature Teal Blue.

Interior and Features

Tata Tiago EV vs MG Comet EV

The Tiago EV’s interior feels dated. Its equipment list includes a 7-inch touchscreen and Harman speakers with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, drive modes and automatic climate control.

MG’s tallboy EV takes a fresh approach with its dual-tone space-grey interior and minimalistic design. The floating twin display and iPod-inspired controls on the two-spoke steering wheel give a premium feel. Connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both wireless, is seamless.

Battery Specs and Range

With a single 17.3 kWh battery pack, MG’s EV hatchback maxes out at 41 bhp and 110 Nm of torque returning an ARAI-certified mileage of 230 kilometres.

Company estimated 0-100% charging time with the 7.4 kW AC fast charger of 3.5 hours is great but if charging time concerns you, the Tiago EV might be a better fit. You can also get an 8-year/ 1.2 lakh kilometre battery warranty with MG’s e-shield programme.

Tata’s Tiago EV’s battery options are divided into medium range- 19.2 kWh, and long range- 24 kWh, returning ranges of 250 km and 315 km (MIDC). The regular charging time from 10-80% with a DC fast charger is 58 minutes, claims Tata. Like MG, there is an 8-year warranty on the EV’s battery.

Price

After the recent price cut and discontinuation of Pace, Play and Plush variants, the MG Comet is an affordable buy at a starting price of ₹6.98 lakh ex-showroom, going all the way up to ₹9.23 lakh for the ‘Exclusive FC’ trim.

Tata Tiago EV has a price range starting from ₹7.99 lakh and goes up to ₹11.89 lakh.
