India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
Toyota Innova Hycross has finally made its global debut in Indonesia as Innova Zenix. In India, the Hycross is set to launch on 25 November. The new model will be sold alongside the current generation Innova, which might be re-targeted at the commercial vehicle segment/ cab operators. Owing to a major generation change, the new Innova Hycross is vastly different to the current model in terms of design, features, powertrain and platform. Here is a quick look at the differences.
From the outside, the Toyota Innova Hycross is a completely new car. Gone are the MPV looks of the old Innova Crysta and in comes a more SUV-inspired face with a flatter bonnet and a more muscular bumper. Unlike the MPV which featured long overhangs, the new model pushes the wheels to the four corners helping the car feature a more stable stance.
The large hexagonal grille with an integrated air dam on the old car has made way for a more chiselled grille with a honeycomb pattern. headlamps. A new bumper element finished in chrome extends the width of the car and splits the lower air dam from the grille at the top. Unlike the outgoing model, which gets large fog lamp housing with turn indicators, the new model features a sleek LED fog lamp unit placed in the air dam below. Also new to the car are silver skid plates which enhance the SUV appeal of the vehicle.
From the side, one can easily visualize the SUV inspiration in the design of the new Innova Hycross. Gone are the MPV-like styling with a boxy design and in comes curvy bulging rear quarter panels that add character to the overall design. In addition, the new Innova Hycross also gets two distinctive creases running across the length of the doors and merging into tail lamps along with wheel arch cladding and new larger 18-inch wheel dual five-spoke wheels.
At the rear, while the Crysta featured an upright and flat tailgate with an inverted L-shaped combination lamp, the Hycross features a raked rear windscreen with sleek wraparound LED tail lamps joined by a chrome strip. Also, another new element at the rear is the faux skid plate and air vents that complete the overall SUV look. Despite their difference, both cars feature the same roof-mounted spoiler that houses the third brake light.
Overall, Toyota has used a good mix of SUV and MPV design elements in the creation of the new Innova Hycross, solving a problem that plagued the Innova Crysta.
Once again, like most generation changes, the new Innova Hycross is larger, wider and features a longer wheelbase than the outgoing Innova Crysta. The new model is 20mm longer, wider and features a wheelbase that is 100mm larger than the outgoing model. On paper, the new dimensions suggest that the new Innova Hycross will offer much more usable space on the inside with a roomier third row.

Based on the teaser images, the interior of the Innova Hycross has been totally revamped. The mechanical design has made way for a more premium looking dash finished with soft touch plastic and leather. While the old dash housed an aftermarket touchscreen system and dated AC controls, the new Hycross features a free-standing infotainment screen along with a new AC unit and digital instrument cluster.
Another major difference is the introduction of a panoramic sunroof on the new model. This is the first time in its two decade long journey that any Innova model will be offered with this feature. Other new bits include electric adjustment for middle row sets with leg rest, ambient lighting and more, all of which make the new cabin more premium and upmarket compared to the outgoing Innova Crysta.
One department where the new model will be leaps and bounds ahead of the old model will be in the safety department. While the old Innova Crysta was already known for its rock solid reliability and safety, the new model takes it a notch higher by offering ADAS. Innova Hycross is likely to get adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning and auto high beam assist as part of the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite.
Excluding that the new model will carry over features like ABS with EBD, Traction Control system, multiple airbags, ISOFIX child seat and electronic stability control as standard features.
The old Innova Crysta sold in India with the choice of either a 2.7-litre petrol engine or the 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine. Toyota is now changing its patterns by providing two new petrol engine choices on the new Innova Hycross. The first is a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine while the other is a 2.0-litre strong hybrid engine. Although the ARAI-certified figures are yet to be revealed, the hybrid unit will likely return a fuel efficiency of 20-23 kmpl. This makes the new Innova Hycross more powerful and more efficient than the outgoing model.
