India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
MINI from the house of BMW offers British heritage and lineage which none in the premium hatchback segment offer. To get a taste of this exclusivity, we got behind the wheel of the 2022 MINI Cooper S earlier. Here is what we found out.
Each engineering masterpiece in today’s day and age has a historic place and value. One such name that instantly will come to the mind is the BMW MINI. With over 60 years of British heritage, the MINI was first introduced after World War II with the intention of targeting customers who were on the lookout for a small car that offered both fuel efficient and practicality. But little did we know that the car which was meant to transport four individuals from point A to B would go on to become a cult machine. Yes, that is correct the MINI till date stands for classic British styling that appealed not only to the masses but to hipsters, royalty, and rock stars. With its fun to drive characteristics what really caught everyone’s attention due to the way it which performed on the tarmac. Certain elements like a wider body frame, carved to increase space on the inside meant that all the four wheels were further pushed out lending it a go-kart like stance and handling characteristics. Plus, the availability of a transverse engine setup ensured that the weight was well distributed enabling great balance and grip. The package became even sweeter when British racing legend John Cooper stepped in to plonk a more powerful engine along with bigger brakes. Rest like they say is history and this is where we would like to introduce the 2022 MINI Cooper S which we recently test drove to analyse why it is so special.
But before we get down to it, let us take a minute and look at its competition. Until a couple of years ago, the MINI faced stiff competition from the Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Beetle. But due to the lack of sales and changing emission norms, both models were discontinued in the market. This gave MINI a free stay and monopoly over the segment.
So, the 2022 model year of the MINI is a facelift which means that you get minor tweaks on the outside as well as on the inside. Let us begin with the exterior design. In overall look and feel, there is nothing like it in the Indian market which automatically makes the hot hatch a crowd puller. From the perspective of an update, the MINI Cooper S gets a redesigned front grille that offers a beard like feel with its premium piano black finish. Functional air vents on either side and twin air intake ensure an aggressive front end. Its oval LED headlights and DRL’s with chrome surrounds stand out from the design point of view. The S letter positioned on the honeycomb grille along with the non-functional air scoop denote its racing pedigree. The panoramic glass roof offers a hint of modernity to the vehicle.
If you think that the front was exciting, then wait till you take a glance at its side and rear profile. The uniqueness lies in its body style. With its 3 doors design and a curvaceous body, the MINI offers a unique look that none in the market can mimic. The hatch also sits on new 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels is a sight to watch. The black plastic cladding further adds a rugged feel while chrome finished door handles and a fuel cap lend the vehicle a distinctive appeal. Coming to the rear, key highlights include the Union Jack inspired taillights and twin exhaust tips.
While the exterior design is still reminiscent of the yesteryear models, the interior of the MINI tells a completely different story. From the inside, the small car is futuristic and charming. Highlights on the inside include the floating instrument cluster and the large round infotainment unit. Compared to the outgoing model, the 2022 unit features a new 5-inch coloured instrument cluster, ambient lighting, updated steering wheel design, carbon fibre panel insert and an all-black theme. While the layout remains the same, the car gets new ambient lighting surround which adds funkiness to the entire on-board experience.
The font seats offer ample cushioning to both the driver and co-passenger while being apt for short and long-distance commutes. Getting access to the rear isn’t the MINI’s strongest point. First there is that entire exercise of pulling the front seat in front and folding it forward to get in. Put your foot inward and the territory is unforgiving given that it takes quite manoeuvring to be seated. Lack of leg, shoulder and headroom indicate that this section of the car is best suited for just children. As for the boot space, it is small and can hold a couple of small bags at the best.
Now that we are done with exterior and interior look and feel of the cabin, let’s get behind the wheel of this sporty hatch and experience the magic. The MINI Cooper S that we are driving comes equipped with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. In sheer numbers, this hot hatch delivers a maximum power output of 192 bhp with 280 Nm of peak torque. The powerplant clubbed with the chassis and the suspension set up is a delight for both daily and weekend use. The 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission lets you enjoy both ends (cruise and performance) of the spectrum. We still remember, the earlier MINIs used to offer a stiff ride quality so that they could retain their sporty character. However, this time around BMW have reworked the suspension based on customer inputs to provide a more comfortable ride. This is a good thing especially for daily commutes. The driver can opt between 3 driving modes named GREEN, MID and SPORT. GREEN as the name suggests is optimal for economical driving while MID is the middle point between economy and performance as for SPORT this is where you can enjoy driving it the most.
The acceleration and the crackling sound of its twin exhausts are sufficient to put a smile on your face every time you tap on the throttle. Further its 0-100 sprint stands at just under 6.7 seconds. The steering isn’t the lightest but is nimble enough to provide a decent amount of feedback. No matter which direction you point the four-wheeler towards it will follow your lead. In terms of safety features, the vehicle provides dual airbags, run flat tyres, Brake Assist to name a few.
So, with a brilliant exterior profile, out of the box interior and a powertrain that ensures goose bumps; the MINI Cooper S is indeed special. Its hefty price tag of Rs 40 lakh might not be the point to drive home about but then again special things always command a premium price. The MINI is your pocket size rocket that can take you places in the lap of luxury and comfort, while offering sufficient performance. In case you have are ready to spend Rs 40 lakh on car, then the MINI Cooper S can be the right option for you.
