Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch its first ever and a mid-size electric SUV by the year 2025.
Maruti Suzuki who till now have not shown a keen interest in the electric vehicle segment will be focusing on this category to bring out an all-new electric SUV by the year 2025. This news was confirmed by the Indian automakers parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation who recently expressed their desire to invest Rs 10,440 crore to promote electric vehicle production in the country. To be manufactured at the homegrown automakers Gujarat production facility, the electric SUV is currently codenamed as the YY8. It will be built on the 27PL platform which is a derivative of Toyota’s 40 PL global platform meant for development of electric vehicles. It is being claimed that this upcoming compact SUV will be bigger than the competition (Hyundai Creta). Once introduced, the model will be exported to international markets and also be rebranded as a Toyota mid-size SUV. Similar to what Maruti Brezza is to Toyota Urban Cruiser.
Talking about the understanding between Suzuki Motor Corporation and the Gujarat government on the side-lines of the Japan Economic Forum, it has also been confirmed that the Japanese automaker will set-up an all new EV manufacturing facility. The unit is expected to be built next to Maruti Suzuki’s plant and should be operational by 2025. Speaking about future production projections, Suzuki claims that it is targeting an annual number of 1,25,000 cars. Out of this, 60,000 units will be allocated to Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motors combined. As for foreign markets, a country like Europe would get 40,000 cars while Japan would receive 25,000 cars from India.
