Jeep Cars has revealed the powertrain options of the next-generation Wrangler. Slated to go into production in 2028, the rugged off-roads will be offered with a range-extender hybrid or a BEV unit. This will become the most significant change for the Wrangler since it was introduced in the 1980s.
Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, has reached an agreement with the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW). The documents reveal what the future of multiple US-built models, including the Wrangler, look like. We take a closer look.
Currently, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler is offered with a range of petrol and diesel powertrain options, depending on the market. Recently, Jeep introduced the 4xe which is powered by a strong-hybrid motor. The documents also revealed that the Wrangler and its Gladiator pick-up sibling, are slated to receive updated plug-in hybrid power units in 2025, and both will be phased out in 2028.
The third-gen J70 Wrangler will be offered with either an electric or a ‘Range Electric Paradigm Breaker’ powertrain option. The latter is simply a strong-hybrid powertrain where the combustion motor acts as a range-extended for the electric motor. The powertrain will be first seen on the Ram 1500 REV in 2025.

The next-gen Wrangler will be underpinned by Stellantis’ new STLA architecture. Part of a new family of EV architectures being applied to all Stellantis products from next year, this body-on-frame platform will major in payload and towing capabilities. The STLA frame can also fit in bigger batteries to manage the heavy workloads and high mileage of commercial vehicles. For instance, the Ram 1500 REV will be offered in two variants with either a 168 kWh or 229 kWh battery pack. They have a fully charged range of around 560 km and 800 km, respectively.

In India, Jeep is planning to launch a compact SUV for our market next year. Given the popularity of SUVs here, Jeep is expecting it to become a popular model for the brand.
