Tata Motors officially started work on a new vehicle manufacturing plant in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu on Saturday. The facility aims to make next-generation four-wheelers and SUVs, serving both domestic and international markets. Notably, JLR will utilise the same factory for its upcoming line of electric cars.
The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, along with various government officials and industry leaders.
Stalin lauded Tata Motors for its loyal and longstanding presence in the state while being committed to “Make in India, for the world". He emphasised the importance of this new factory for skill development and local employment. It will run entirely on renewable energy and over 5,000 jobs stand to be created. “I look forward to the completion of the project soon and would like to personally invite Chandrasekaran to attend the inauguration,” ANI reported.
Chandrasekaran stated that Tamil Nadu is a key industrial hub with a large skilled workforce. He further highlighted Tata’s goal to empower women in the workplace and promote advanced manufacturing technologies at the factory.
The homegrown brand plans to invest Rs 9,000 crore in the new facility, which will have the capacity to manufacture over 2.5 lakh automobiles every year. Production will begin in a phased manner, reaching full capacity over the next 5 to 7 years.
