Top 5 Indian Cars Recently Crash Tested

GNCAP (Global New Car Assessment Program) recently crash tested the Hyundai i20, Toyota Urban Cruiser and Hyundai Creta for safety.

As a part of the #SAFERCARSFORINDIA campaign, the GNCAP in its latest round recently tested the Hyundai i20, Toyota Urban Cruiser and Hyundai Creta. The premium hatchback i20 and the best-selling SUV Hyundai Creta scored 3 stars while the Toyota Urban Cruiser achieved 4 stars GNCAP Safety Rating for adult occupant protection.

The GNCAP regularly performs the frontal offset crash test at 64 kmph and scores vehicles for both adult and child occupant safety ratings. The vehicles used for such tests are base trims featuring front airbags and standard safety equipment. The safety stars are awarded based on points scored during the crash test. For adult and child safety the maximum points are 17 and 49 respectively.

Hyundai Creta

Hyundai Creta scored 8 points out of 17 for adult safety rating translating into a discouraging 3 star for adult safety. The 3-star safety rating was quite predictable after its Korean siblings Kia Seltos which is based on the same platform got similar crash test ratings. Both the SUVs have just managed to touch the 3-star rating as anything below 8 points is categorised as 2 stars. Similarly, Creta has scored 3 stars for child occupant safety and the bodyshell integrity has been rated as unstable. As per the GNCAP, the protection offered to the driver’s head was adequate and the passenger’s head was good. The driver and passenger neck showed good protection while the chest area showed marginal protection for both. Meanwhile. the Footwell area was rated unstable.

Hyundai i20

Hyundai i20 fared marginally better in terms of points than the Hyundai Creta but still managed a similar 3 Star Safety Ratings for both Adult and Child safety. The hatchback scored 8.84 and 36.89 points for adult and child safety ratings respectively. The protection for the driver's head was evaluated as adequate while for the passenger it was rated as good. Both the driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection. Its bodyshell integrity was rated unstable.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

Toyota Urban Cruiser scored a respectable 4 Stars in the Adult Safety Rating. It is important to note that the Urban Cruiser’s counterpart the Vitara Brezza scored a similar rating when tested earlier. However, the Urban Cruiser scored a better 3 Star Child Safety Rating as compared to the 2 Star scored by the Vitara Brezza. Urban Cruiser scored 13.52 out of 17 and 36.68 out of 49 points for Adult and Child Safety respectively. Coming to the essential details, the driver’s chest showed adequate protection while the passenger’s chest protection was rated as good. The bodyshell integrity and footwell area were rated stable.

 

Mahindra XUV 700

The Mahindra XUV 700 which was crash tested at the end of last year came out with flying colours scoring a full 5 Star Safety Rating for Adult safety. The SUV scored a stunning 4 star in Child Occupant Safety with a score of 41.66 out of 49. The vehicle offers class-leading safety features like ADAS, adaptive cruise control and more in its top of the line trim. As far as the test is concerned, Mahindra provided the AX3 variant which only offers standard safety equipment. The Mahindra SUV scored 16.03 points out of 17 in Adult Safety. It’s bodyshell and footwell area were found to be stable.

Tata Nexon

The subcompact SUV from Tata shines with a 5 star rating for adult safety. The SUV achieved 16.06 points out of 17 for Adult Safety and a satisfactory 25 points out of 49 for Child Safety, translating into 3 stars. The bodyshell and footwell area were rated stable.
