Toyota confirmed to launch the Urban Cruiser Hyryder compact SUV on 1st July; The Creta rival SUV is developed in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki; Will get new strong-hybrid powertrain option
Creating buzz around its 1st of July 2022 launch, Toyota Kirloskar Motors has released a teaser video showcasing its product. Named the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, this will be the company’s first compact SUV for the Indian market. The four-wheeler has been developed in conjunction with Maruti Suzuki and will get mild hybrid and strong hybrid powertrain options.
Based on the test mules spotted on Indian roads, we understand that the new SUV will showcase the brand's latest design direction with a large wing front grille. The four-wheeler will be based on the company’s heavily localised TNGA-B platform that also underpins many international products. Unlike past JV models, the SUV will be manufactured at Toyota’s facility in Bidadi, Karnataka and will carry a premium feel with top-notch quality levels and reliability.
Media reports suggest the car will come fitted with a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree parking camera, connected car tech, a semi-digital instrument cluster and more. We also expect Toyota to equip the compact SUV with ADAS tech to make it more attractive in its segment.
According to the latest set of leaks, the four-wheeler will come with the choice of two powertrain options. The lower trims will be provided with the 1.5-litre Maruti Sourced K15C four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired to a mild hybrid motor producing 103bhp of power. This engine will be available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission option. On the other hand, higher variants will get the same 1.5-litre engine with a strong hybrid system consisting of a large battery pack and two electric motors to drive its front wheel. The power output of this setup is rated at 116bhp. Toyota will use a eCVT gearbox on the first hybrid compact SUV in the country.
When launched, the Hyryder will lock horns with well-established players in the Indian market like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and the MG Astor.
