Ford Cars

Ford India is a subsidiary of the American car manufacturer, Ford Motor Company. Headquartered in Chennai, Ford entered in the country in 1998 but discontinued all its locally developed products in 2021. The Indian arm of the American automobile giant is now planning to re-start its India operation by introducing its global cars. 

Ford Cars India is also considering local development of electric cars for domestic and export markets. The iconic Ford Endeavour will mark its re-entry in the country. It will be called Ford Everest. The company will also introduce other global products including the Mustang Mach-E and Ranger Pick-up lifestyle pick-up truck. Ford India will produce electric cars and powertrains at its Chennai based plant for export markets.

Ford Cars India History

Ford India Pvt Ltd was a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, and handles its operations in India. Ford India's headquarter is located in Sholinganallur Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The company also had a manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, which was sold to Tata Motors. 

Ford entered the Indian market in October 1995 as Mahindra Ford India Limited, a 50:50 joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra. In 1998, Ford renamed the company Ford India Private Limited and launched several models in India including the Ford Escort, Ford IKon, Ford Mondeo, Ford Endeavour, Ford Fusion, Ford Fiesta, Ford Figo, Ford Freestyle and Ford Mustang.

In 2019, Ford was in talks with Mahindra & Mahindra to establish a new JV, but those plans were canceled in April 2021. Ford India has a manufacturing facility in Chennai with a production capacity of up to 2 lakhs with three shifts.
