Toyota has recently revealed the concept form of its electric Innova MPV in Jakarta at the Indonesia International Motor Show. The first electric powertrain on a mass-market vehicle, the Innova EV is more of a thrilling teaser than anything else. Though it's a thrilling preview, it is made clear by Toyota that the concept model won't be coming into production or sale anytime soon.
The Toyota Innova is one of Asia's best-selling models. In India alone, two versions are offered: the ICE-powered Innova Crysta and the new Innova Hycross with a hybrid powerplant. One of the measures Toyota has taken to drive EV vehicles in Southeast Asia is the electric concept unveiled in Jakarta. The model revealed during the motor show is based on the Kijang Innova, one of Southeast Asia's top-sellers.
The electric MPV concept car runs on a 59.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The battery accommodates both AC and DC charging systems to allow flexibility in changing charging demands. Toyota has not, however, issued any explicit statement regarding the driving range of the Innova EV.
What Toyota has announced is the output of the car's power. The Innova EV's electric motor has around 180 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. The car, according to a Toyota official, is presently at the level of long-term trials, meaning it is being tested for running on highways as well as intercity journeys. The trial is a part of the research and development of Toyota's upcoming electric vehicles.
Design of Innova EV is based on the current Innova Crysta MPV but with some significant differences. The car features a closed grille at the front, typical of electric cars, LED DRLs, and headlamp units on either side of the grille. The electric MPV also features "BEV" badging, indicating it is a battery electric vehicle.
The Innova EV is founded on 16-inch alloy wheels and has door handles, body moldings, and a blacked-out roof that are chrome trimmed. It also comes with LED rear tail lights connected by a light strip at the back. The most notable difference from the existing model is the absence of a "frunk," or front trunk, which is typically available in certain electric cars.
Within, the Innova EV interior is much similar to the current Innova vehicles but with a difference. The battery positioning has enabled the flat floor architecture, which allows for increased leg space for the second-row passengers. Captain chairs are used for the middle row seats, with enhanced comfort. The vehicle also features modern amenities like wireless charging, leather-wrapped steering wheel, high-resolution big touchscreen infotainment, digital driver display, dual-tone interior upholstery, and ambient lighting.
