Mahindra plans to launch XUV 7XO Hybrid in 2027 XEV 9e range-extender EV in the works
Automakers are now increasingly adopting a multi-powertrain strategy to cater to diverse market demands. Mahindra & Mahindra is also transitioning towards in this direction, although its major focus remains on ICE vehicles and EVs. The indigenous automaker is now considering strong hybrid SUVs and range-extender EVs for the Indian market.
According to a fresh media report, Mahindra is working on two projects, codenamed W63 and W623, which are expected for the Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid and Mahindra XEV 9e range-extender EV, respectively.
The Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid is currently under evaluation, and expected to launch in 2027. The carmaker is likely to equip the SUV with a series-parallel hybrid system as we have seen in the Maruti Grand Vitara.
A series-parallel hybrid powertrain comprises of an internal combustion engine (ICE), an electric motor and a battery. During low-speed city driving, the vehicle utilizes only electric motor with power supplied by the battery. During highway cruising, the petrol engine can directly drive the wheels for providing improved fuel efficiency. During braking, the electric motor also functions as a generator to recharge the battery through regenerative braking system.

The Mahindra XEV 9e could be among the first INGLO platform based EVs to feature the brand’s range-extender technology. It’s expected to hit roads sometime in 2028.
A range extender hybrid (REH) system includes a small capacity ICE engine or generator to charge the battery, and extends the vehicle’s driving range. A REH setup produces electricity to recharge the battery instead driving the wheels directly. On the other hand, the hybrid powertrain uses an electric motor to drive the wheels from the power coming from the battery pack.
Compared to the strong hybrid system, the range-extender hybrid technology is less fuel efficient and require regular maintenance. However, it significantly improves driving range and reduces range anxiety, with no dependence on charging infrastructure.
Mahindra will need to do extensive Research & Development (R&D) along with significant engineering modifications to make the INGLO platform compatible with a range-extender setup. Usually, the dedicated EV dedicated platforms are not designed to accommodate a petrol engine and other components. To integrate these elements, Mahindra will work on vehicle packaging, thermal management, crumple zones and crash safety structures.
