Mahindra XUV 7XO to get a strong hybrid engine Launch expected in 2027

We informed you earlier that Mahindra is planning to launch hybrid vehicles in the Indian market. The company had showcased 4 concepts based on the new NU_IQ platform, which is claimed to be hybrid ready. A new media report claims that Mahindra is considering multiple hybrid powertrain options, including range-extender EVs and strong hybrids.

If media reports are to be believed, Mahindra is exploring strong hybrid technology for future SUVs based on its existing ICE platforms. It is expected that the Mahindra XUV 7XO will be the first model to receive a strong hybrid engine. The XUV 7XO hybrid is expected to be launched around 2027.

Based on the W601 monocoque platform, the Mahindra XUV 7XO will receive a strong hybrid system which is similar to the tech-offered with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The company could utilise the 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine paired to an electric motor and a small battery pack. The SUV would run on electric power for short distances, while using the combustion engine to drive wheels when required.

Not just Mahindra, Hyundai, Kia, and Renault have also announced to launch hybrid vehicles in the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are already preparing 7-seater derivatives of the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, respectively. On the other hand, Renault’s upcoming 7-seater SUV will come with a 1.8L hybrid powertrain. Hyundai and Kia are also working on new 7-seater hybrid SUVs, which will be launched by 2027. While Hyundai will launch a new 7-seater SUV based on the Tucson LWB, Kia will introduce a new 7-seater Sorento SUV. All these hybrid SUVs will directly challenge the Mahindra XUV 7XO.

Mahindra XEV 9e: Range Extender

The homegrown automaker is also exploring range-extender technology for the INGLO-based SUVs. The Mahindra XEV 9e is likely to be the first model to get the range extender powertrain. This tech will mainly use a petrol engine to act as a generator to charge the battery, instead of driving the wheels. The vehicle will continue to work as an electric model, but the petrol engine charging the battery pack keeps improving its range.

Mahindra has already started testing the range-extender hybrid tech, and the company is evaluating the 1.2L and 1.5L turbo petrol engines for the INGLO-platform based electric vehicles. The platform will be heavily updated to accommodate an engine, gearbox and an exhaust system.
