The premium luxury sedan segment has many offerings however when it comes to these three mentioned aspects there is only one that stands tall to take the claim. It is BMW’s M340i. We recently test drove the vehicle to find out how it is to live with on a day to day basis.
But before we get to that, let us look at the significance of this particular model. The 3 Series has been BMW’s best-selling model and accounts for nearly 30 percent of the brand’s annual sales. As for the current 7th Generation, it is nothing but drop dead gorgeous for its exterior design, interior layout, features and performance. Moreover, positioned between BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine and the M3, it hits the sweet spot when it boils down to the pricing standing at Rs 72.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
Generally, we would have started the review with the looks of the vehicle however, the case is a bit different out here. Seeking the fun to drive element in BMW M340i, we shall straight away talk about its performance.
Performance is now more affordable as the vehicle allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds, the calmness and the hooligan in you. Power comes to all four wheels via a 3.0-litre inline 6 turbocharged petrol engine that delivers a maximum power output of 374 bhp with 500 Nm of peak torque.
The power plant further features a 48v mild hybrid system. The 8-speed ZF automatic transmission helps put the power down onto the tarmac all the way up to 7000 rpm. The car in comparison to the normal BMW 3 Series is quick, the gear shifts are spot on while the direction play is how you would like it to be. Further there are 4 Drive Modes on offer namely Eco Pro, Comfort, Sports and Sports Plus. In the first two modes, the machine ways in well however in the Sports Mode it is a beast waiting to pounce.
In case you intend on taking it to the racing track, then there is Launch Control. Performance wise, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 in just 4.4 seconds. With an M-sport suspension on board, it feels a bit stiff but not that uncomfortable while its handling is great and true to its character. Its 125 mm ground clearance does pose a threat to the under body while tackling speed breakers on our roads. On the whole, on an open stretch you can really flex the power and enjoy the thrill of driving.
From a design perspective, there are quite a few demarcations that set the M340i apart from the regular 3. It gets revised components such as the new twin L-shaped DRL’s alongside LED headlamps. A new honeycomb grille fearing flaps that open when required to cool the engine and an aggressive looking front bumper with an air inlet.
To the sides, there are new 19-inch M sport alloy wheels with floating wheel caps and M signature light blue brake callipers. The M badging on the front fenders and mirror casings finished in gloss back provide it a sporty look. Towards the rear, the profile is sharp and edgy. It offers twin exhaust tips and a diffuser that comes finished in piano black. As a package it not only looks sporty but has the all the intend of unleashing its might on the road.
The moment you hop in, the first thing that will come to your notice is its curved twin screen layout. The fit and finish is top quality as expected from a BMW. Further, the infotainment screen provided here is responsive as it also offers functions such as wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Unlike the previous generation 3 Series that had physical buttons for the air-conditioning system, in the M340i they have now been incorporated within the infotainment system. If you enjoy music while being on the move, then the sedan comes equipped with a Harman Kardon sound system.
Staying true to its performance attire, there are carbon bits that can found all-round the cabin. This being a personal favourite, the toggle switch in the form of a gear lever feel nice to hold. Now let’s talk about the seats. The presence of Alcantara helps further push the sporty and premium nature of the interior. They feel a bit hard but are bolstered well to keep you in place while tackling those corners. Both front and rear offer good amount of knee, shoulder and legroom. Though in respect to ride quality the rear passengers would be exposed a harsher drive.
With all aspects covered now, is the new BMW M340i worth the money? Well, given that its nearest competitor happens to be the Audi S5 Sportback; this car is performance oriented and fun to drive. At a lower price tag than the New BMW M3 in our view, the sedan is practical as it can be used as a daily driver and the odd appearance on the track. No matter whether behind the wheel or as a mere occupant, the M340i will always put a smile on your face each time that you head out on the road.
