The current Mahindra 3-door Thar is known for its off-road abilities, but it is not the best choice for families. Taking this into account, Mahindra & Mahindra as we all know for quite some time now is working on a 5-door version of the Thar to make it more appealing to prospective customers. It is expected to hit Indian roads in 2024. Moreover, it is likely to come with a new suffix associated with the Thar name. The automaker has already trademarked seven possibilities. Let's take a look:

Recent trademark filings reveal that the brand is considering calling the Upcoming SUV the 'Thar Armada.' This name is likely to evoke nostalgia among off-roading enthusiasts, as Mahindra had a 5-door SUV called Armada back in the 1990s. The Thar Armada could be a modern-day revival of this iconic model.

In addition to 'Mahindra Thar Armada,' the manufacturer has filed trademarks for six other names, such as Thar Cult, Thar Savannah, Thar Rex, Thar Roxx, Thar Centurion, and Thar Gladius. Probably, the company is planning to use these additional trademarks for the potential variants or different models within the Thar lineup.
The upcoming 5-door Thar is likely to offer various safety features as standard, such as 6 airbags, Hill Hold and Descent Control, Electronic Stability Program, Brake Assist, and ABS with EBD. Other equipment on board would include TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), Child Seat Anchor Points, ISOFIX, and Seatbelt Reminders for all seats among others. Additionally, we expect the company to throw in some more features for this particular version.
The powertrain choices for the 5-door Mahindra Thar are expected to remain the same. There will be two engine options including a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel unit and a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol mill. Due to the larger size of the 5-door Thar, expect the power and torque figures to be different from the 3-door version. For the transmission options, you can choose between a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
