Three years after the launch of a facelift model, Hyundai Motor India Limited has finally taken the wraps off the Next-Gen Verna in India. Launched at a starting price of Rs 10.89 lakh (ex-showroom), this is a global debut for the sixth-generation model that is set to go on sale internationally soon.
Based on the Sensuous Sportiness philosophy, the new Hyundai Verna features a bold exterior design. The grille has grown larger in size with parametric jew elements and is now flanked by a new LED headlamp units. A new LED light bar sits on top of the grille and extends the width of the car.
Towards the side, we get to see a striking resemblance between the Verna’s and the recently launched Tucson’s design with both cars featuring sharp cuts and creases on the doors and the fender. In addition, we also get to see new design 16-inch alloy wheels and a sloping roofline giving the car its fastback look.
At the rear, there is the familiar H shaped brake lights that we have seen on cars like the Venue. This time the rear lights get a new crystalline detailing and extend the width of the car.
Overall, the design of the new Verna is fresh and aggressive in every sense.
Like the exterior, the interior of the 2023 Hyundai Verna is a sharp departure from the previous generation model. The overall cabin is finished in a dual-tone black and beige leather upholstery for the standard models while the turbo variants get a sportier all black theme with red highlight accents.
The more premium and up market cabin holds a lot of resemblance to the current-gen BMW cars with its twin floating screen setup for infotainment and the instrument cluster. The 10.25-inch touchscreen comes paired to 10-speaker Bose sound system, home-2-car, OTA and smartphone mirroring capability.
Lower down there are numerous physical and capacitive buttons that are used for both climate control and to control the infotainment unit.
What is also new on the model is the two-spoke steering wheel, ventilated and heated front seats, power adjust for the driver seat, wireless charging pad and 64 colour ambient lighting.
Taking safety, a notch higher, the company has introduced Hyundai SmartSense on the new model. This new ADAS tech first made its debut with the Tucson during 2022 and now the Verna is the second Hyundai model to come equipped with this safety system. Like the Tucson, the new model comes with a myriad of features that include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and more.
While 6 airbags, ABS, EBS, ESP and more features are offered as standard on the new Verna, the ADAS functions are reserved only for the higher end trims.
The new Verna comes powered a new 1.5-litre engine option that is offered with two states of tune. The N/A petrol is rated for a lower 115 bhp and 144 Nm of torque while the turbo-petrol models retunes a higher 155 bhp and 253 Nm of torque.
The NA petrol returns a claimed economy of 19.8 kmpl while the turbo petrol is rated for 20.60 kmpl.
The former engine option comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or an IVT transmission option, while the latter is available with a 6-speed manual of 7-speed DCT gearboxes.
Talking about the dimensions, the new Verna measures 4,535mm in length, 1,765mm in width and 1,475mm in height with a wheelbase of 2670 mm which is the segment best. The larger dimensions has resulted in a 50 litres increase in the boot space for a total of 528-litres.
The 2023 Verna is offered in 4 variants. The pricing for the base model starts at Rs 10.89 lakh (ex-showroom) while the top end variants cost Rs 17.37 lakh (ex-showroom). While there is no N-Line model for the Verna, Hyundai has provided the Turbo petrol variants on the SX and SX (O) trims with all-black alloy wheels, red brake calliper and metal pedals.
