It is no secret that Toyota is preparing an all-new SUV, which will be positioned between the Corolla Cross and the Fortuner. Rumoured to be called the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ or the FJ Cruiser, the new SUV was originally scheduled to be released in 2025. The launch has been delayed due to the impact of the certification fraud issue, which is still ongoing. The Japanese media report that the new FJ Cruiser will now be released around Spring 2026 - around April-June 2026.
The new Toyota FJ Cruiser will be based on the traditional ladder-frame chassis instead of the Toyota’s TNGA-F architecture. The Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 300 are based on the GA-F architecture, which will prove to be expensive for the Land Cruiser FJ. It will use the brand’s IMV 0 platform that underpins the Hilux Champ pickup truck, which is on sale in select ASIAN markets.
To be positioned between the Corolla Cross and the RAV4, the new FJ Cruiser is likely to measure around 4.5 meters long. The SUV is likely to have a wheelbase of 2,750mm, which is similar to that of the Innova Crysta and Fortuner.
The company will work on improving the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) levels to make it more refined than the Hilux Champ. It will come with a full-time 4WD system with Torsen Limited-Slip differential to control the front and rear torque distribution depending on the road surface and driving conditions. The SUV offers three driving modes - Eco, Normal, and Sport.
The new Land Cruiser FJ is expected to receive a 2.7-litre, 4-cylinder 2TR-FE petrol engine, which also powers the That-spec Hilux Champ. Paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the engine produces 161bhp and 246Nm of torque. The SUV is also likely to get a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine with a mild-hybrid system. This engine is available with multiple Toyota SUVs, including the Fortuner and the Land Cruiser Prado.
