India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
Japanese automaker, Toyota, has been receiving an overwhelming response for its new breed of cars in the Indian market. Moreover, Toyota's hybrid cars, including the Innova Hycross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder are well received by Indian customers. In order to further boost sales, the company plans to launch 3 new SUVs in the country in the next couple of years.
Toyota will launch the 7-seater version of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder in the country in 2025. It will be produced by Maruti Suzuki's at its upcoming production facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, which is set to get operational in 2025. In fact, 7-seater Grand Vitara will also be produced at the same production line. The new model will be based on the modified Suzuki's Global-C platform, which underpins the Brezza, Grand Vitara and Hyryder.
The architecture will be modified to accommodate a longer wheelbase and a longer 5+2 seater SUV. The 7-seater Hyryder is likely to be offered with 1.5L K15C petrol mild-hybrid and 1.5L Atkinson cycle strong hybrid powertrain. The SUV could also receive more features, including advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).
Toyota will introduce its first electric SUV based on the Urban SUV concept in the Indian market in the second half of 2025. It is basically Toyota's version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX. The concept measures 4300mm in length, 1820mm in width and 1620mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2700mm. The SUV will share the features and interior styling with the Maruti Suzuki EVX.
The Urban SUV from Toyota will be based on the 27PL skateboard architecture, which is basically the low-cost version of the brand's 40PL architecture. The SUV will be produced at Suzuki's Gujarat facility for both export and domestic markets. It is likely to be offered with two battery pack options - a 60kWh unit and a 48kWh unit. The SUV will have both FWD and dual-motor AWD options.
It is no secret that Toyota is developing the next-gen Fortuner SUV, which is expected to be introduced sometime in 2025-26. Before launching the SUV, the new model could receive a mild-hybrid diesel version of the Fortuner SUV in India. The Toyota Fortuner MHEV is powered by the same 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine, which is coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The mild hybrid system offers an additional power and torque of 16hp and 42Nm, respectively.
This engine produces 201hp of power and a peak torque of 500Nm. A six-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox is likely to arrive as standard. Both 2WD and 4WD setup are likely on offer. The new Fortuner diesel mild-hybrid offers an improved fuel efficiency. The global-spec model is claimed to offer a fuel efficiency of 13.15kmpl. As a reference, the non-hybrid model delivers 12.65kmpl.
