Buoyed by positive response for new breed of cars, Toyota is now planning to introduce a wide range of new SUVs in the Indian market in the next 1-2 years. The company is working on multiple new models globally, and few will also arrive in our market. Toyota will launch 3 new SUVs including the Land Cruiser Prado and Urban Cruiser EV in India in 2025. Adding to it, the Japanese brand will have a new 3-row SUV based on the Hyryder SUV. Let's talk about these SUVs in detail -
Toyota had introduced the latest generation LC Prado in global markets in 2023. The new-gen Land Cruiser Prado will enter the Indian market towards the end of 2025. To be positioned below the LC300, the LC Prado is based on the ladder frame chassis that is claimed to be 50% more rigid than the previous gen model. Dimensionally, the SUV is 4920mm long, 1870mm tall and 1980mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 2850mm.
The new Land Cruiser Prado is bigger than the previous model, offering more cabin space. It shares features and switchgears with the LC300. The SUV gets multi-zone climate control, a digital instrument console, leather upholstery and a larger touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The new Land Cruiser Prado will be powered by the same 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a 48V MHEV mild-hybrid tech. Coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, the diesel engine produces 201bhp and 500Nm of torque. In the global markets, the SUV also gets a 2.4-litre petrol engine with a hybrid tech, which is the same engine that powers multiple Toyota and Lexus models. It is claimed to offer better all-terrain capabilities, as it has increased wheel articulation, and an upgraded Multi-Terrain Monitor interface.
Toyota is reportedly working on a 7-seater derivative of the Hyryder, which is likely to arrive in 2025-26. In fact, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara will also receive a new 7-seater derivative. Both SUVs will be produced at Suzuki's upcoming production plant in Haryana. The new model will be based on Suzuki's Global C platform, which will be modified for a longer wheelbase 3-row SUV. It will share the powertrain options with the 5-door version. The new model will get the 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre TNGA strong hybrid powertrain. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.
Toyota has finally revealed the production-ready version of the Urban SUV Concept in the global markets. Called the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, the new e-SUV will be manufactured at Suzuki's Gujarat based plant and will be exported to Europe and Japan. The electric SUV is based on the EV-only e-HEARTECT platform that underpins the upcoming e Vitara. It will arrive in our market sometime in late 2025.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser measures 4285mm in length, 1800mm in width and 1640mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2700mm. The higher variants get 19-inch wheels, while lower models get 18-inch wheels. The electric SUV comes with a sliding rear seat system, which allows the passenger to create extra space. In terms of features, the electric SUV gets a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, electrically adjustable driver's seat, a JBL premium audio system, a fixed sunroof, ADAS and a 360-degree surround view camera.
The Urban Cruiser EV comes with two battery packs - 49kWh with FWD setup and 61kWh with FWD and AWD setup. The former comes with a front-axle-mounted electric motor offering an output of 144hp and 189Nm of torque, while the 61kWh version with FWD setup offers 174hp and 189Nm of torque. The dual-motor AWD version produces 184hp and 300Nm of torque. The SUV gets Downhill Assist Control and a Trail mode which detects and brakes a spinning wheel while directing drive torque to the opposite wheel. The FWD model gets a "snow mode" which controls drive torque to help reduce wheel-slip when driving on snow-covered roads.
