The lifestyle pickup truck segment in India is gradually gaining popularity as people are looking for rugged and adventure-ready vehicles. However, the options in this space are currently limited to the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu V-Cross. This scenario is set to change soon as three new models are expected to hit roads in the near future. Here’s a brief overview of the upcoming lifestyle pickup trucks.
The Mahindra Scorpio N Pickup truck was first showcased in its concept form in August 2023. One of its test mules (production-ready) was caught on camera, featuring a single cab configuration with an extended bed and a large rear overhang. Its overall silhouette and several design elements closely resemble to the Mahindra Global Pik-Up concept. The pickup’s concept was designed at Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS).
Under the hood, this upcoming lifestyle truck will employ a Gen-II 2.2L mHawk diesel engine, pushing out a maximum power of 175bhp and 400Nm of torque. It will be offered with two gearbox options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Features such as the 4WD system, four drive modes (Normal, Sand, Mud-Rut and Grass-Gravel-Snow) and shift-on-the-fly functionalities will further enhance its performance.
The Japanese automaker unveiled the updated Isuzu D-Max in late 2024. However, there is no official word on its India launch timeline. In Thailand, this lifestyle pickup truck comes with 1.9L and 3.0L turbo diesel engines, delivering power worth 163bhp with 360Nm and 190bhp with 450Nm, respectively. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are on offer. The Isuzu D-Max facelift can be had with either the RWD or 4WD setup.
The top-end trim of the pickup truck has been packed with features such as a n9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a new 7-inch MID screen, 8-way power adjustable driver seat, ventilated seats, advanced PM 2.5 air filter, USB C ports for both front and rear passengers, updated ADAS suite (offering new features). Major changes have been made to its design as well.
Reports suggest Toyota will introduce the Hilux with a mild hybrid drivetrain in several markets including India. This lifestyle pickup truck will continue to underpin the IMV platform and come with significantly improved styling. It will feature slimmer headlamps merging with the top section of the grille, a more upright nose and an extremely flat bonnet. Similar to the Land Cruiser Prado, it might get the Toyota text branding between the headlamps replacing the logo. The grille will be offered with multiple design elements including slats and honeycomb patterns, depending on the variant.
The updated Hilux will also get the newly designed alloy wheels, revised front fenders, slightly revised rear taillamps and rear bumper. Interior details of the pickup are not available yet. However, it is likely to witness several upgrades including more screens and improved material quality.
