New Car Buying Platform
• Will get redesigned front and rear end • Interior to get new first-in-class features • Might skip diesel powertrain option
Hyundai is gearing up to launch the updated i20 sometime next year. Now, spy shots of the hatchback testing under heavy camouflage have appeared from South Korea. The i20 was last updated in 2020 with a generation change.
While all the changes couldn’t be noticed due to the camouflage, it looks like the updated i20 will feature a redesigned grille, new headlights, and revised front bumper. The profile of the hatchback will remain similar except for new alloy wheel design. The rear-end is also expected to be changed to accommodate a new taillight unit with a horizontal LED strip running the width of the car.
Moving to the interior, the dashboard layout will remain largely unchanged, not a bad thing since the current i20 already gets the latest generation 10-inch touchscreen system. However, expect Hyundai to add some minor updates like a 36-degree camera and bring some segment-first features like ventilated front seats with the facelift.
Mechanically, the upcoming i20 is expected to remain the same. Customers will get to choose from the existing crop of petrol engines. A new change in the variant line-up could be the removal of diesel engine models.
With the new Real Driving Emission norms kicking in from April next year, the diesel i20 may get discontinued from the hatchback’s lineup. This means small-capacity diesels will need to get an expensive update called Selective Catalytic Reduction units to meet the new norms. As this is not cost-effective, manufacturers have started dropping the powertrain completely from their lineups.
A couple of years ago, i20 sales were split evenly between petrol and diesel. Now, only around 10% of the total sales are diesel. For Hyundai, it makes more sense to discontinue the diesel instead of updating it.
