Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara will be the first electric offering from the Indo-Japanese automaker in the country. This midsize electric SUV was recently unveiled in its production version in Milan. It’s a born-electric EV that will be positioned against the MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6e and Hyundai Creta EV. Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing facility will serve as the production hub for the e-Vitara.
The carmaker plans to export 50 percent of its production to Japan and Europe. The market launch of the Maruti e-Vitara is scheduled for March, after its public debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025. Here are all the key details we know so far about the upcoming Maruti electric SUV.
The production-ready Maruti e-Vitara shares a strong resemblance with the eVX concept, which was first showcased at last year’s Auto Expo. The EV has dark plastic cladding around the lower section of the body, highlighting its rugged look. The charging ports are placed on the front flanks. The new Maruti electric SUV carries the brand’s “High-Tech & Adventure” design theme and features tri-slash LED DRLs at the front and rear, prominent arches over the rear wheel arch, and a rear-door-integrated C-pillar. While the 2WD variants of the SUV have 225/55 R18 wheels, the 4WD model comes with 225/50 R19 wheels.
Dimensionally, it’s as big as the Hyundai Creta EV. The overall length, width, and height of the e-Vitara stand at 4,275mm, 1,800mm, and 1,635mm, respectively. Its wheelbase, however, is longer than the Creta, measuring 2,700mm. It has a ground clearance of 180mm. The kerb weight varies variant-wise, ranging between 1,702kg and 1,899kg. The EV’s turning radius stands at 5.2 meters.
The Maruti e-Vitara has been designed on an all-new skateboard architecture called Heartect-e, co-developed with Toyota. The carmaker says this platform offers “the advanced feel of a BEV and the robust nature of an SUV.” This architecture includes ‘eAxles’ that consist of the motor and inverter. The Heartect-e will also underpin Toyota’s upcoming first-ever EV in India, based on the e-Vitara.
Maruti Suzuki has taken a different approach to designing the interior, as it doesn’t resemble any other Maruti Suzuki model. It features a horizontally stacked dashboard, a floating center console with a gloss black finish, a storage area with USB ports, and a dual-screen setup – one for infotainment and one for instrument functionalities. It includes a twin-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, physical AC controls, rectangular AC vents with brushed silver surrounds, semi-leatherette upholstery, and a rotary drive state selector.
Features such as a wireless phone charger, drive modes (including ‘Trail’ for AWD variants), an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, single-zone auto climate control, heated mirrors, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are also on offer. On the safety front, the major highlight is the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), offering features such as lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more. If the India-spec e-Vitara comes with ADAS tech, it will be the first Maruti Suzuki model to offer this feature in the country. All variants will have three-point seat belts for all passengers, Isofix child seat mounts, ABS with EBD, and more safety features.
Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that its upcoming electric SUV will come with two battery options – a 49kWh and 61kWh – boosted by BYD’s Blade technology. The dual-motor AWD setup will be exclusively available with the larger battery pack. The smaller and larger batteries, with a single motor fitted on the front axle, deliver maximum power outputs of 144bhp and 174bhp, respectively. The torque output of both setups stands at 189Nm. Its range figures are yet to be revealed. However, the larger battery version is likely to offer over 500km on a single charge. The AWD or AllGrip-e system will add an extra 65bhp with a rear-axle-mounted motor. Its combined power and torque outputs stand at 184bhp and 300Nm, respectively.
The Maruti e-Vitara price in India is estimated to start at around Rs 20 lakh for the entry-level variant packed with the smaller 49kWh battery. The top-end variant with the 61kWh 2WD setup could be priced at around Rs 25 lakh, while the e-AllGrip AWD version might cost around Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom).
