The Toyota Fortuner has been one of the most popular and high-selling premium SUVs in the Indian market. Known for its rugged looks, reliability and driving capabilities, the Fortuner SUV has been a huge a hit in the Indian as well as in global markets. While Toyota is reportedly working on the next-gen Fortuner, the existing model is expected to receive some significant changes in near future in India.
Seeing the growing demand for hybrids, Toyota is planning to introduce the Fortuner with a mild-hybrid diesel engine in the country. A possible launch in June-July 2025 can’t be ignored; however, Toyota is yet to make an official announcement on the same. The Fortuner diesel hybrid has already been introduced in the South African market. The SUV looks similar to the Fortuner Legender; however, it receive some major upgrades.
The Toyota Fortuner MHEV gets the same 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that powers the current Fortuner SUV. This engine is coupled to a 48V mild-hybrid system that offers an additional power and torque of 16hp and 42Nm, respectively. This engine produces 201hp and 500Nm of torque, and is paired to a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. Both 2WD and 4WD configurations are on offer.
The new mild-hybrid system also improves its fuel efficiency. The South African-spec Fortuner MHEV is claimed to deliver a fuel efficiency of 13.15kmpl. The non-hybrid model is claimed to deliver 12.65kmpl.
Toyota claims that the new idle start-stop system improves the throttle response and contributes to a smooth engine restart. Additonally, the start-stop system improves the SUV’s performance during bumper-to-bumper driving.
The new Fortuner diesel mild-hybrid is also likely to come with high-end safety and security features. It gets a 360-degree surround view camera and Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite. The ADAS offers multiple safety features such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist and forward collision warning.
