The Toyota Fortuner remains one of the favorites in India's SUV market as it delivers everything an active car buyer wants with his full-size, tough SUV. Launched globally in 2004 and now in its second generation, it continues to be a vehicle developed over the reliable Toyota Hilux pickup truck platform. The new 2021 redesign also adds new features, a variant called Legender, to boost its popularity. In 2023, the Fortuner holds on to its muscular design and strong off-road performance, skillfully supplemented by the best-in-class accident avoidance safety features and most energetic powertrain options.
The Toyota Fortuner price starts at Rs. 3343000 and goes to Rs. 5144000 with the ex-showroom price tag. It is offered in two broad trims, the standard model and the GR-S variant, with the sporty Legender variant being that extra buck with more premium features and cosmetics in it.
The variant quite often regarded as value for money is the Toyota Fortuner 4x2 Diesel Automatic. It combines the punchy diesel motor with an automatic transmission to give a very simple balance between performance, comfort, and price minus the excess cost of added 4WD features that may not be a must-have for every buyer.
The Toyota Fortuner stands out with its bold exterior, featuring a trapezoidal front grille, sleek LED headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, it offers an 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with leather seats and ventilated front seats for added comfort. Higher trims come equipped with an 11-speaker JBL sound system for a premium audio experience. The SUV also comes with wireless charging, a powered tailgate, multiple driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport, and paddle shifters for better driving dynamics.
Toyota Fortuner mileage is up to 10.1 kmpl, based on the variant. Now, though this number does not lead the class, it is enough for such a massive SUV with impressive off-road capabilities and robust engine options.
The Fortuner does come with some advanced features to protect its occupants, irrespective of the type of terrain. However, it has seven airbags across all its variants and also includes ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, VSC, and HAC. Besides, it has downhill assist control, active traction control, and an electronic differential lock to support off-road performance. It also features front and rear parking sensors to make driving and parking much easier.
The Toyota Fortuner is available in seven colors, which are: Platinum White Pearl, Sparkling Black Crystal Shine, Phantom Brown, Super White, Attitude Black, Avant-Garde Bronze, and Silver Metallic. Adding to its aggressive ruggedness, it completes the whole scheme by adding a few darker shades for a dominant, aggressive look on the highway.
The Fortuner comes in two variants of engine: 2.7 litres with 163.72 bhp and 245 Nm of torque, and a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 201.20 bhp and up to 500 Nm of torque in the case of the automatic variants. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic for the petrol variant and a 6-speed manual or automatic for the diesel. Among the other variants also, 4WD is available, which offers better performance in off-roading, especially in harsh terrains.
In space and utility, the Fortuner is built with a length of 4,795 mm, 1,855 mm in width, 1,835 mm in height, and 2,745 mm in wheelbase. An 80-litre fuel tank makes it perfect for a long drive. In this regard, it does not provide a proper boot like a sedan, but the 296-litre cargo space and collapsible third-row seats can provide adequate room for luggage and equipment.
The biggest competitor for Toyota Fortuner is Jeep Meridian, offering a premium city-friendly experience, while Skoda Kodiaq attracts the eye with its refined interior and on-road comfort. The MG Gloster offers high-tech and generous interiors but certainly cannot match that off-road toughness. Even with such strong competitors, the Fortuner continues to be extremely popular since it is tough enough to handle off-road, a brand reliable in terms of reliability, and always adventure-ready.
