Buoyed by overwhelming response for new breed of cars, Toyota is now planning to add multiple new SUVs in its line-up in India. This year, the company plans to launch at least 2-3 new SUVs including the Urban Cruiser EV and the 7-seater derivative of the Toyota Hyryder. Adding to it, the Fortuner Hybrid is also expected to arrive in our market in the coming months. Out of these three SUVs, two are 7-seater models with possible launch before the end of this year.
Expected Launch - end of 2025
Competition - Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus
Engine - 1.5L NA petrol, 1.5L Hybrid
It will be a rebadged version of the upcoming 7-seater Maruti Grand Vitara that’s currently under testing. The Hyryder 7-seater has already been caught testing a couple of times on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Karnataka. The spy images confirm that the SUV will have some design changes including sleeker LED DRLs, lowered placed headlamps in boxy housing, an updated grille with tweaked air-dams and revised bumper.
The silhouette is basically an extended version of the existing Hyryder. The SUV’s wheelbase could be increased to accommodate third-row seat. It is likely to get newly designed alloy wheels, sleeker LED tail-lights, and a full-width connected LED bar.
Toyota is likely to add more features to Hyryder 7-seater compared to the 5-seater version. It could get a larger touchscreen infotainment unit, a bigger digital driver’d display, an 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, multi-colour ambient lighting, a HUD, a panoramic sunroof and a wireless phone charger. In terms of safety, the SUV will have six airbags as standard, a 360-degree surround view camera, TPMS, electronic parking brake with auto hold, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).
Engine options will include a 1.5L NA petrol with mild hybrid tech, a 1.5L strong hybrid tech and a 1.5L petrol-CNG. The naturally-aspirated petrol engine will come with FWD and AWD set-up, and produces 103PS and 137Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
The strong hybrid engine offers a combined power and torque output of 116PS and 141Nm, and is paired to an e-CVT. In the CNG mode, the engine produces 88PS and 121.5Nm of torque, and is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Expected Launch - mid-2025
Competition - Skoda Kodiaq
Engine - 2.8L Diesel with mild-hybrid tech
Japanese automaker, Toyota is reportedly working on the next-gen Fortuner which is likely to be launched sometime in 2026-27. Before introducing the new model, Toyota will give some changes to its existing model. The company is planning to introduce the Fortuner SUV with a mild-hybrid diesel engine in the country. The SUV has already been introduced in the South African markets. It looks similar to the Fortuner Legend; however, it receive some major upgrades.
Powering the Toyota Fortuner MHEV is a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine coupled to a 48V mild-hybrid system that adds another 16hp and 42Nm. The engine produces 201hp and 500Nm of torque, and is paired to a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. Both 2WD and 4WD drivetrains are on offer. The mild-hybrid system will offer higher power, more torque and higher fuel efficiency compared to the non-hybrid model.
The idle start-stop system in the Fortuner mild-hybrid claims to offer improved throttle response and performance during bumper-to-bumper driving. It is also likely to come with high-end safety and security features. The SUV gets a 360-degree surround view camera and Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite with features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, high-beam assist, and blind spot monitoring.
