India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
The sports utility vehicle (SUV) lineup of the Indian automotive giant Mahindra is set to get an addition in the form of the Mahindra Thar five-door, which will be positioned under the Scorpio N. Whether you are an adventurous person looking forward to driving off-road or a family car owner looking for comfort and space, both the upcoming Mahindra Thar five-door and Scorpio N are great options to consider.
Mahindra has borrowed the Scorpio N’s platform for the Thar five door to make it a balanced on and off-roader. Being a tried and tested platform, Mahindra will try to strike a balance between urban and offroad use. For reference, the three-door Thar measures 3,985 mm, 1,855 mm and 1,920 mm in length, breadth and height, respectively. Its wheelbase measures 2,450 mm. Talking about the design aspect, the new Thar will have a larger silhouette but retain the boxy design the Thar nameplate has always had. Notable are the iconic round headlights which have been refreshed.
The Scorpio N looks like it has matured over time and has gone through a lot of revisions. It looks aggressive in its overall design resulting in muscularity focused on space and comfort. Its length, breadth and height are 4,456 mm, 1,820 mm and 1,995 mm. With a ground clearance of 187 mm, the SUV commands a powerful presence on the road.
Mahindra is expected to provide the new Thar with a bigger infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as we await official confirmation from the brand. Even the instrument cluster will be digital. A standout feature of the Thar is its waterproof upholstery, perfect for off-road trails. There is no match for pure offroading DNA that the Mahindra SUV offers in this segment. Much of the credit goes to the homegrown manufacturer’s research and development. Just like the competition, it may receive Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera for enhanced safety.
In the Scorpio N, you get ventilated seats and frameless auto-dimming outer rear-view mirrors. The dashboard is thoughtfully laid out, with intuitive controls and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that seamlessly integrates with the car's advanced technology features. Further, the SUV offers dual-zone climate control, cruise control, front & rear cameras, a wireless phone charger, and more features.
As for safety concerns, the Scorpio N comes equipped with an extensive array of advanced safety features. Some of these features include ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control, Hill-Assist Control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, and six airbags.
The upcoming SUV will receive three engines - a 1.5-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel. The smaller 1.5-litre unit will be rear-wheel drive and the other two engines will be borrowed from the Scorpio N in a similar state of power. Except for the 1.5-litre block, a 4x4 system will be offered with the larger engines. Power and torque output range between 119 bhp to 200 bhp and 300 Nm to 400 Nm, respectively. Notably, all these engines are turbocharged. Transmission duties will be handled by manual and automatic units. Even the suspension setup is borrowed from the larger Scorpio N to handle increased power and off-road terrains.
Scorpio N, on the other hand, misses out on a 1.5-litre diesel engine but the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are offered with the four-wheeler. The power and torque output of these engines are 200 bhp, 380 Nm and 173 bhp and 400 Nm, respectively.
