Suzuki Motor Corporation is gearing up to introduce generational updates for its two highly popular kei cars in Japan – the WagonR and the Alto. The Suzuki WagonR, first launched in 1993, will enter its seventh generation in 2025 with a full hybrid powertrain. The Suzuki Alto, on the other hand, is set to undergo its tenth generational update in 2026. Both models are expected to bring significant advancements in technology, performance, and design.
The new WagonR will receive a full hybrid powertrain as its biggest update. In Japan, it is likely to be equipped with a 0.66L, 3-cylinder DOHC inline hybrid engine paired with an eCVT (electric continuously variable transmission). The petrol engine will produce 54PS, while the electric motor will generate 10PS.
This hybrid setup is designed to reduce carbon emissions significantly, alongside improving fuel efficiency. Although official mileage figures are not yet available, the WagonR hybrid is expected to deliver a fuel economy of over 30kmpl.
Aesthetically, several cosmetic changes are anticipated. The Japan-spec WagonR could feature sliding doors instead of the hinged doors seen in the current model. With these updates, the price of the WagonR is expected to increase, with its hybrid version estimated to cost around Rs 7.22 lakh (1.3 million Yen), compared to the regular model's starting price of Rs 5.55 lakh in Japan.
The next-generation Suzuki Alto, debuting globally in 2026, will focus on becoming significantly lighter, safer, and more fuel-efficient while delivering better performance. Reports suggest that the new Alto’s kerb weight will decrease by 100kg, bringing it down to approximately 580-660kg.
This weight reduction will be achieved using an advanced version of the Heartect platform, along with ultra-high tensile steel (UHSS) and advanced high tensile steel (AHSS), which will also improve structural rigidity. The current 12V mild hybrid setup will be replaced with a more advanced 48V system, branded as “Super Ene Charge.”
With this upgrade and the lightweight body, the 2026 Alto is expected to achieve a fuel efficiency of over 30kmpl, surpassing the current petrol version’s 25.2kmpl and mild hybrid version’s 27.7kmpl.
As for their India launch, there is no official confirmation yet. However, speculation suggests that the new WagonR, with its hybrid powertrain, might eventually be introduced to the Indian market.
