Toyota has revealed new details and specifications on its latest 48V mild-hybrid tech that will be used on the brand’s upcoming SUVs and pickup trucks. The automaker says that the system will offer an enhanced driving experience, aid fuel efficiency and have a quieter start up compared to a traditional start/stop system.
The new 48V mild-hybrid system will first be introduced on Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine that powers the Land Cruiser Prado. Post that, we expect the same system to make its way into more Toyota Car models like the Fortuner and Hilux in markets like India. The Toyota Hilux mild-hybrid was recently confirmed to go on sale in the Australian and South African markets before the end of the year, while the new Toyota Fortuner mild-hybrid has also been confirmed for next year.
The new Toyota mild-hybrid system consists of three main components, a DC-DC converter, a 48V battery, and a belt-driven electric generator which replaces the engine's conventional alternator. The automaker claims that the system offers enhanced torque assist , regenerative braking, smoother start/stops, and up to 10% better fuel economy compared to diesel-only powertrains.
Toyota also added that the new mild-hybrid system has been developed with off-reading in mind, and it won’t affect the performance and towing capabilities of the upcoming Fortuner and Hilux. The system’s components have been positioned strategically to allow for a water wading sept of up to 700mm. According to the automaker, the lightweight components will also allow the system to be fitted into existing powertrains with minimal modifications.

Currently, Toyota offers strong-hybrid tech on the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Vellfire. The rest of the range, like the popular Fortuner, Hilux, and Legender use conventional diesel powertrains. Since the new system will be introduced in the 2.8-litre turbo diesel motor that also powers the three models mentioned, it is very likely that Toyota will introduce the new mild-hybrid tech on the next-gen Fortuner and Hilux in India soon.
