Underage driving is a huge problem in India that children and parents must clearly understand. During the past two years or so, the Indian government has enforced severe penalties that limit this issue not only upon underage drivers but even extend it to hold the parents or guardians liable for the same. Here's what they are and the liabilities of underage driving. What is Underage Driving? The term underage driving is used for those who are below the age to drive. In the case of India, the age one attains to drive also depends on the type of vehicle one is driving.   Age: 16 years: The age for gearless two-wheelers. They must not have an engine capacity of more than 50 cc. 18 years: It applies to all other vehicles with a higher engine capacity like cars, gears, and motorcycles Anyone who drives under this legal age of driving is considered an underage driver. They also attract fees in terms of penalties. Underage Driving Penalties The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 was amended in the year 2019. Under these amended provisions, some stringent punishments have been included against underage drivers. Some of them are as follows:  A fine of Rs. 25,000: Minors driving are liable to face a fine amounting to Rs. 25,000. Imprisonment: The minor may also face up to 3 years of imprisonment. Revocation of the right to drive legally: A minor, once caught, would not be allowed to apply for a driving license before the age of 25, effectively losing the right to legally drive for several years. These punishments are an attempt to deter the juvenile from driving without a valid license. The homegrown UV maker, Mahindra is all set to introduce the much-awaited BE 6e and XEV 9e electric SUVs in the country on November 26, 2024. Ahead of the official reveal, Mahindra has released key details of both electric SUVs. For people not in the know, the BE 6e is the production-spec model of the BE.05 while the XEV 9e is the production version of the XUV.e9. Battery Specs The company has confirmed that the new electric SUVs will be based on the born-EV INGLO platform, which is compatible with different battery capacities and body-styles. The new electric SUVs will be offered with two battery packs - 59kWh and 79kWh. Both batteries will have a LFP (Lithium iron Phosphate) chemistry.  Charging Details Both batteries support fast charging up to 175kW DC fast charger. Using 175kW DC fast charger, the batteries can be charged from 20 percent to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. The Mahindra BE 6e and XEV 9e will feature brand's 'compact three-in-one powertrain' that comprise of a motor, inverter and transmission.  Power Output Mahindra reveals that the motor can produce between 231hp and 286hp of power, depending on the state of tune. The homegrown UV maker is not offering AWD setup with these two SUVs. Both will come with rear-axle-mounted motor only. However, media reports reveal that the Mahindra BE 6e could receive an AWD setup with dual-motor offering higher power and torque output.  The Mahindra BE and XEV electric SUVs will offer multiple drive modes, a semi-active suspension setup and brake-by-wire technology. Earlier this year, Volkswagen Group and Mahindra & Mahindra engaged in concrete discussions regarding a potential partnership for passenger vehicle production in the domestic market. As the talks progressed, the indigenous automaker expressed interest in acquiring a 50 percent stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (the Indian arm of the VW Group), which was estimated to be valued at around USD 1 billion. Exploration of Electrification Opportunities Gradually, both companies also began exploring a joint venture in the electrification segment, focusing on the development of a compact EV based on VW’s MEB21 architecture. However, this project was later scrapped as Mahindra appeared uninterested in pursuing the JV. Proposal of the CMP21 Architecture SAVIPL (Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd) reportedly considering a cost-effective, all-electric CMP21 (China Main Platform) architecture as an alternative. The China-sourced CMP21 platform is relatively more affordable than the MEB21 and has a shorter development timeline. However, Mahindra & Mahindra hesitated to adopt this proposal due to significant overlap with its own upcoming born-electric SUV range. Additionally, the CMP21 platform, with its lower ground clearance, does not align with Mahindra’s SUV strategy, which prioritizes class-leading ground clearance. Current Status of Negotiations The latest update on this matter reveals that negotiations between the two business groups for the potential 50:50 JV have stalled due to disagreements on key issues. The OEMs have failed to reach a common ground on critical aspects of the partnership. However, Mahindra and SAVIPL have already signed a series of non-binding MoUs (memoranda of understanding) on multiple business subjects in the past few months. While agreements on some important matters were expected to be finalized by the end of this month, Mahindra is reportedly unwilling to proceed further, certainly its strong market position. The indigenous automaker appears reluctant to compromise on sourcing and development costs.
