The Korean automaker, Kia will launch the new Carnival and the EV9 flagship electric SUV in the country on October 3, 2024. The big news is that Kia Carens will receive a mid-life update and an all-electric derivative in 2025. In fact, both models have been caught testing multiple times on the Indian roads.
The Kia Carens EV will be based on the heavily modified K2 platform that underpins the Carens ICE, Creta and Seltos. In fact, Hyundai Creta EV, scheduled to be launched in January 2025, will also be designed and developed on the same architecture. Not just the architecture, the Carens EV will share its silhouette and interior bits with the ICE model.
The electric MPV will receive some EV-specific design changes, which will be in-line with Kia Born electric EVs. It will come with a closed front grille, which is likely to share styling with the Kia EV9. The electric MPV will come with new front and rear bumpers, a revised headlamp setup and newly styled alloy wheels. Recent test mules reveal that the Kia Carens EV will have a different suspension setup compared to the regular model.
In terms of features, the Carens EV is likely to get a digital driver's display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, ventilated front seats, and an electric sunroof. It could also get an advanced driver assistance system or ADAS with features like autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane assist and others. The MPV will get 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control, hill hold assist and others.
The Kia Carens EV is likely to share the battery pack and electric motor with the Hyundai Creta EV. The Creta EV is expected to feature a 45kWh battery pack along with a front-axle-mounted electric motor. In fact, the electric motor is expected to be shared with the base-spec Kona EV on sale in global markets. The electric motor is rated at 136bhp and 255Nm of torque. The Carens EV is expected to offer an electric range of up to 450km on a single charge.
Kia Carens EV could make its global debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025. The launch could take place in mid-next year. Kia would aim to achieve competitive pricing for the new electric MPV. We expect the new Kia Carens EV to price under Rs 20 lakh. It will rival the Tata Curvv, MG Windsor EV and others in its segment.
