The Indian off-road has been blessed for quite a long time with the much-loved Mahindra Thar. The brand is cherished for its rugged look and adventurous feel. Recently, it has attracted much attention for its safety features besides off-road performance. After an exemplary four-star safety rating from Global NCAP, the latest model from the house of Mahindra Thar reflects its enhancement in safety standards.
In this blog, we are going to discuss the Thar's safety rating, safety features, specifications, and pricing.
The new Mahindra Thar has been designed with several safety features that ensure the driver's safe and sound driving. First of all, it is internally equipped with a roll cage for protection in a rollover case. In addition, seat belts are three-point, plus there are dual locks for the convertible as well as the hard-top variants, thereby adding to the overall safety factor.
Safety features of the Thar include having dual airbags at its front. These provide much-needed protection for both the driver and the passenger at the front. Active safety comes in the form of an electronic stability program (ESP), vehicle dynamics control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. All these combine to ensure that vehicle stability improves and accidents will be prevented from occurring.
In contrast, the Thar also features things like rollover mitigation, hill descent control, and hill hold, which is very valuable for off-road adventures. ISOFIX child-seat mounts are standard fitment, which means it is easier to securely fit a child seat.
The Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) recently put the Mahindra Thar for crash tests, and some good results were seen. Adult and child occupant protection were awarded four stars, a rating that comes from the SUV's performance in a crash test with its standard safety specification, incorporating two airbags.
For the adult occupants, the head and neck area of Thar were found to be well protected. For the driver's chest, adequate protection was found, and for the passenger's chest, good protection was found. However, in terms of structure, this vehicle is rated as stable, while the footwell area is unstable, which means that further loads may not be endured by the vehicle in the case of a severe crash.
In terms of child occupant protection, the Thar went relatively well, as it has offered nearly complete protection. It boasts standard ISOFIX anchorages, top ropes, and three-point seatbelts across all seating positions. The vehicle will, therefore, suitably protect children when they are safely restrained in child seats.
Global NCAP also said that the Thar met the standards of side impact UN 95 regulation and tested its electronic stability control under UN regulations. However, ESC is not fitted as standard to the Thar, and though it met minimum regulatory requirements, the vehicle shows unstable dynamic behavior in its tests. Global NCAP has thus recommended Mahindra to review and improve the stability of the vehicle.
The Mahindra Thar is available in three engine options to drive the vehicle according to the requirement of the user. A 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine, producing 116.9bhp and 300 Nm of torque, is offered in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
There is the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which churns out 150.19bhp and 300Nm of torque. It can be mated with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. It is offered in 4x4 drive.
A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel with the capability to churn out 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. It also has a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gear and 4x4 drivetrain.

The Mahindra Thar comes with a very competitive price tag, starting at Rs. 11.35 lakh ex-showroom for the base diesel manual rear-wheel drive model. The top-end diesel automatic 4x4 Earth Edition has a premium price tag of Rs 17.60 lakh.
The competitors for the Thar are off-road SUVs, mainly Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha. However, though all these alternatives have different features and capabilities, Thar has much better ratings in safety and tons of features that take it above the rest in this segment.
A four-star safety rating from Global NCAP marks the high point for the brand that has promised to raise the bar in making automobiles even safer. Equipped with a well-thought-out set of features, it promises to deliver utmost protection on both sides: both drivers as well as passengers. It does have scope for improvement in terms of dynamic stability, but the Thar works out as one of the best options for people looking for adventure and safety in one go.
