India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
Japanese automaker Toyota had showcased the Corolla Cross H2 concept at the 2023 Auto Expo. This triggered a rumour that the company could launch the Corolla Cross mid-sized SUV in India in near future. It was speculated that Toyota will launch the 7-seater iteration of the SUV; that didn't happen.
The Toyota Corolla Cross 7-seater SUV was planned to fill the void between the Hyryder and the Fortuner SUV. Other news doing rounds is that Toyota will launch a new 7-seater SUV, which will be based on the new Toyota Hyryder. Toyota is yet to make an official announcement on the launch of any of these two models in India.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is built on the brand's TNGA-C modular architecture that underpins the new Innova Hycross. The Hycross has a wheelbase of 2,850mm. This 5-seater model rides on 2,640mm, which could be increased by 150mm to accommodate a 7-seater SUV. The Corolla Cross 7-seater would be placed below the Fortuner SUV, and will rival the Jeep Meridian, Mahindra XUV700 and others.
The Toyota Corolla Cross comes with a typical crossover-SUV looks, featuring a sloping roofline and the signature Toyota front design. The 7-seater model will have different design elements compared to the 5-seater SUV. It will retain the crossover silhouette; however, the SUV is expected to have a flatter roof to create decent headroom space in the third-row.
The 7-seater Toyota Corolla Cross is likely to receive a redesigned grille and new lower bumper with a faux skid plate. The SUV will have different headlamps, new alloys and a completely revised rear profile. It is likely to get an updated tailgate design and new LED tail-lights.
The Toyota Corolla Cross 7-seater is likely to share the interior with the Innova Hycross. However, it is likely to get more features compared to its MPV sibling. The MPV is likely to feature a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument console. The SUV will come equipped with a new panoramic sunroof along with an electric sunshade.
The new model is likely to come with flexible seats, as the rear seats could be folded down to create flat floor. It is also likely to feature an electrically operated tailgate. The C and D-pillars of the SUV are likely to be tweaked to create more space in the 3rd row
The Toyota Corolla Cross mid-sized SUV is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) suite with features like adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance assist, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking and others. This system uses radar technology to anticipate and avoid potential collisions. The SUV is likely to get six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control, hill launch assist and others.
In the global markets, the Toyota Corolla Cross is offered with a 136bhp, 1.8-litre petrol or a 120bhp, 1.8L petrol-hybrid tech. The India-spec model is likely to share the engine options with the Hycross. The SUV is expected to be offered with two powertrain options - a 172bhp, 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 186bhp, 2.0-litre petrol with Toyota's self charging strong hybrid tech.
