Revolutions per minute or RPM simply refers to the number of times a car engine’s crankshaft turns in a minute. The same can be observed in the RPM metre usually housed in the driver’s instrument cluster beside the speedometer. It is very important to understand RPM to strike the right balance between engine performance and fuel efficiency. Read along to learn about the significance of RPM in cars.
To better understand the concept of RPM, let us take the example of an internal combustion engine. We all know that the engine runs on a mixture of air and fuel and this mixture enters the motor when the driver accelerates, ultimately leading to the opening of inlet valves. The more the acceleration, the higher the revolutions of the crankshaft, causing high RPM. This also results in increased fuel consumption.
It is to be noted that the peak power and torque figures need not come at the end of the RPM range. Car manufacturers always make it a point to disclose when an engine’s peak horsepower and torque are achieved in the rev band. If a car’s engine is revving at 3x1,000 rpm, it implies that the crankshaft is rotating 3,000 times in a minute.
Turbocharged Engines have a habit of spooling up at a certain rpm producing an instant rush of torque. If you have a turbocharged car, you can learn about the peak rev band in the car’s manual. This happens because turbochargers let in extra air once they are awakened by the combustion gases.

An engine running on high RPMs will have high noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels and generate a lot of heat as well, resulting in engine wear and tear and high maintenance costs. Daily driver cars are not designed for revving high for long periods as it hampers the car’s mileage.
A good rev band for extracting the best mileage out of your car is from 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. However, you may need to rev or accelerate beyond the above range depending on the road conditions, including an incline or offroad. Another factor to consider is that in petrol cars, driving in higher gears (5th or 6th gear) means you are going at a high speed but the same may not be the case with diesel cars. They can even run at a lower RPM of 2,000 at low speeds as they produce enough torque.
Monitoring your car’s revolutions goes beyond extracting mileage and power. If you were to notice your RPM fluctuating at idle, it can be cause for concern and seeking a technician’s help can solve the problem. Common causes of irregular RPM are clogged carburettor, dirty air filter and faulty spark plugs. If not addressed at the earliest, it may cause a significant drop in the mileage and may result in other engine problems.

Q1. What is a good RPM for a Car?
It is ideal to drive your car at lower RPMs, usually in the range of 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. This results in lower fuel consumption and an increase in the mileage.
Q2. Do Automatic Cars have RPM?
Yes, RPM is present in cars with automatic transmissions and it is adjusted according to the road conditions by the vehicle.
Q3. What does 6,000 RPM Mean?
A 6,000 RPM means that the engine’s crankshaft is rotating 6,000 times in a minute.
