The Hyundai Exter is the Korean brand's most affordable and smallest SUV in the Indian market. This small SUV was launched in July 2024. The micro SUV is positioned against the segment-leader Tata Punch. It comes with Hyundai's new design language, which we have already seen on the new Creta and Verna.
The Exter micro SUV is offered with a single petrol engine with manual and AMT gearbox options. It also gets a CNG variant. The entry-level car is available in 6 monotone and 3 dual-tone exterior colours including 2 new paint schemes - Cosmic Blue and Ranger Khakhi. This model is positioned between the Grand i10 Nios and the Venue in the brand's line-up.
The Hyundai Exter is one of the most feature-loaded entry-level SUVs on sale in India. Even the base variant is fitted with 6 airbags, keyless entry, LED tail-lamps, digital instrument cluster with 4.2-inch MID, ESC, HSA, VSM and others.
The small SUV comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, and voice navigation. It gets a rear parking camera, multi-functional steering wheel, cruise control, wireless phone charging, sunroof, and others. In fact, the MODEL also gets an electric sunroof, a dashcam and connected car tech with ALEXA support.
The Exter sits below Venue and measures 3815mm in length, 1710mm in width and 1631mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2450mm that's similar to Grand i10 Nios. Despite being compact in size, this small SUV offers an impressive boot space of 391-litres.
The Hyundai Exter appears more like a tall-boy hatchback. However, it gets some SUV-like styling elements. It has flared wheel arches, prominent plastic cladding and roof rails. The overall styling is based on Hyundai's global design language, which we have seen on the new Verna and Creta. It features a clamshell bonnet, a black-finished Parametric grille and H-pattern LED daytime running lamps. It has projector headlights and the 'MODEL' lettering is placed above the signature grille.
It also comes with a stylish front bumper with heavy cladding and faux silver skid plate. The small SUV rides on 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The blacked-out pillars and prominent roof rails give it a SUV-touch. The rear appears more in-line with hatchback design. It has the signature H-shaped tail-lights that are connected by a black strip. Other design highlights include a faux skid plate, a dual-tone bumper, a shark fin antenna and a roof-mounted spoiler.
The Exter cabin is inspired from other Hyundai entry-level cars including the Nios and the Aura. However, Hyundai has made some changes to give it a more premium feel. Instead of a dual-tone paint scheme, the SUV's cabin is finished in all-black colour scheme. There is a fully digital instrument console with a 4.2-inch multi-info display.
Similar to the Grand i10 Nios, it gets the patterned effect on the dashboard and around the gear lever. The higher-spec variants are offered with semi-leatherette seat upholstery. This small SUV comes with an electric sunroof and automatic projector headlamps. It also gets the segment-first factory-fitted dashboard with dual cameras (front & rear). Other features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay support, a wireless charging, and connected car tech.
For safety and security, the new Hyundai Exter gets six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill assist control (HAC), ABS with EBD, reverse parking camera & sensors, a three-point seatbelt for all seats in mid- and top-level variants. In fact, lower-spec variants can also get these additional safety features as an optional.
This micro SUV is available in a total of 22 variants including Petrol MT, Petrol AMT and CNG. The Hyundai Exter is available at a starting price of Rs 599900, which goes up to Rs 1014900 for the top-end variant.
Powering the Hyundai Exter is a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated, 4-cylinder petrol engine that also powers the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, i20 and Venue. This engine produces 81.80 bhp and 113.8 Nm of torque.Gearbox options include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT.
In the CNG mode, the power and torque drops to 67.72 bhp and 95.2 Nm of torque. It is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox. All the petrol variants are offered with both MT and AMT gearboxes. The SX trim with AMT gearbox is also available with paddle shifters.
The Hyundai Exter petrol manual version is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 19.4kmpl. The AMT version gives a fuel economy of 19.2kmpl. The CNG variant returns an ARAI certified mileage of 27.10 km/kg.
The Hyundai Exter is positioned against the likes of the Tata Punch and the Citroen C3. It can also impact the sales of similarly priced hatchbacks including the Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Wagon R and others.
