On the outside, the 2023 Hyundai Exter features a clean-sheet design based on the company’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ philosophy. The stubby bonnet and the upright stance gives the car its butch and boxy design. Upfront we get to see Exter badging on the top along with a new parametric grille below. The grille is flanked by squared LED projector headlamps while ‘H-shaped’ LED DRLs sit on top. The overall design of the front end is completed with the large silver skid plate on the bumper.
Moving to the sides, we get to see bulging wheel arches and thick body cladding. The 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels on all four-corners enhance the overall appeal of the car and is offered in either Black or Silver colours depending on the variant.
The rear end of the new Exter remains almost identical to the front with its muscular crease and H-motif for the LED taillamp. Just like at the front, the rear also get a black parametric strip at the rear connecting the two tail lamps along with a rugged looking skid plate.
Overall, the Hyundai Exter is a good-looking SUV.
Unlike the exterior that is all new, the interior layout of the Exter has been borrowed from the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS and Hyundai Aura. The flowing dashboard design features an 8-inch touchscreen system at the centre along with an all-digital drivers display. The infotainment unit also comes with segment first ‘Sounds of Nature’ feature. Other key equipment include diamond pattern on the dashboard and centre console, automatic climate control, wireless charger, cruise control, rear AC vents and more. The SUV also offers segment first features like sunroof and metal pedals on select variants.
While the Grand i10 NIOS was offered with a lighter dual-tone colour scheme for the upholstery, the Exter is provided with an all-black theme for more SUV-ish appeal. The company is also providing three interior piping and stitching options on the Exter to match with its exterior colour.
Safety has been a key factor in the inception of the new Hyundai Exter. Key equipment on offer include 6 airbags, 3-point seat belt with seat belt reminder, hill start assist, ABS with EBD, ESC, Traction Control, TPMS and more. As a segment first feature the company has also introduced a dashcam with dual camera recording as an option on select variants.
The new Exter comes equipped with the same powertrain option as the Aura and the Grand i10 NIOS. The 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine is rated for a maximum power output 82 bhp and peak torque of 114 Nm. This unit comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT transmission with paddle shifter. This engine is rated for a claimed mileage of 19.4 kmpl.
We also get the choice of the 1.2-litre Kappa CNG engine that produces 68 bhp and 95 Nm of peak torque. This unit is offered with only a 5-speed manual gearbox option. This engine returns a claimed fuel economy of 27.1 km/kg.
Rivals to the new Hyundai Exter include Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite and the Renault Kiger.
