Audi is planning to introduce a new global naming strategy to help simplify its current range. As per the latest reports, the brand will give an odd-numbered badge for its ICE models and even numbers for EVs. We take a closer look into how it will work in the future.
Audi cars is set to introduce an electric counterpart of the next-gen Q5 SUV, which will now be named the Q6 e-tron. The brand is also expected to introduce the new A6 e-tron sedan sometime next year, while the ICE-powered model will switch to the A7 nameplate. Audi’s technical boss Oliver Hoffmann explained that it will ultimately become an obvious means of differentiation between the two powertrain types.
The new naming system will retain the e-tron branding for its EVs. Hoffmann stated, "In the future, A6 will be as clear as the battery-electric vehicle. It will be the A6 e-tron, like the Q6 e-tron, but if anyone says 'this is the Q6', you know it is a battery-electric vehicle. You don't have to use the e-tron badge or ICE badge."
However, the e-tron badging will now become more subtle, similar to the TFSI and TDI badging Audi uses for its ICE models. Hoffmann added, "If you look at the whole market, you have a lot of badges to show 'this is an electric car', 'this is a PHEV', and from our point of view, this is a clear structure of naming," Hoffmann said.
