We informed you earlier that Mahindra beats Hyundai to become the second largest carmaker in February 2025. This was based on official brands Dealer dispatches last month. According to FADA, Hyundai slips to 4th position in the retail sales in February 2025. As usual, Maruti Suzuki secured the top position with 1,18,149 vehicles retailed in the month of Feb.
- Maruti Suzuki currently holds a market share of 38.94 percent in February 2025 as compared to 39,34 per cent in the same month last year.
- Mahindra and Mahindra is at the second position in retail sales. The company sold 39,889 units in February 2025. The company held a market share of 13.15 per cent last month as against 11.74 per cent in February last year.
- Tata Motors retailed 38,696 units in February 2025 and has a market share of 12.75 per cent. The company had a market share of 13.51 per cent in the same month last year with a total of 45,710 vehicles retailed.
- Hyundai retailed 38,156 units in the month of February 2025 and holds a market share of 12.58 per cent.
This is a huge shift considering Hyundai had 12.85 per cent market share with 59,858 units sold in the month of January 2025. Tata Motors and Mahindra had 11.57 per cent and 11.14 per cent market share, respectively, in January. The latest numbers show a significant month-on-month decline in the sales of Hyundai in India.
There is an intense battle going on between Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra to capture the number two position in the list of top car makers in India. Hyundai has been holding this position for the past decade; however, the rise in demand for homegrown passenger vehicles helped Mahindra and Tata to significantly increase their sales.
Mahindra is currently selling only utility vehicles. With SUVs only in the portfolio, Mahindra manages to climb the second position. This is a remarkable achievement and shows the potential shift in market dynamics. The overall passenger vehicle segment witnessed a significant year-on-year sales decline in February 10.34 per cent. Automakers recorded a total retail sales of 3,03,398 units in February 2025 as against 3,38,390 units in the same month last year. In fact, the retail sales saw a massive MoM decline of 34.88 per cent as against 4,65,920 passenger vehicles were retailed in January 2025.
Mahindra rise also hints towards the rising demand for SUVs amongst Indian car buyers. Mahindra's popular SUVs including Scorpio, XUV700 and XUV 3XO have received an overwhelming response from buyers. Despite being one of the oldest in the market, the Mahindra Bolero still remains the dominant player. Hyundai's Creta and Venue are also registering huge sales.
Tata Motors compact cars including Nexon, Punch and Tiago are also doing great business, as all three are offered with ICE and EV powertrains. The brand is preparing to bring back the iconic Sierra nameplate and hopes to further increase sales in the market.
