Tata Sierra SUV is making a comeback to India in an all-new avatar. We had its first glimpse in concept form at the 2023 Auto Expo, followed by its leaked patent images. Interestingly, this time around, the SUV will be offered with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, and electric. Let’s see what could be offered with the new Sierra.
First, talking about its electric iteration, the Tata Sierra EV is likely to be offered with single-motor and dual-motor configurations along with the optional AWD (all-wheel drive) system. While its official specifications are yet to be revealed, the EV is expected to deliver a range of around 500 km on a single charge.
The Sierra petrol is most likely to be offered with Tata’s all-new 1.5L Hyperion turbo engine. This TGDi three-cylinder engine meets the BS6 Phase II emission regulations and complies with E20 fuel. It’s claimed to produce a maximum power of 123 bhp at 5,000 rpm and 225 Nm of torque between 1,700 rpm and 3,500 rpm. This gasoline motor is made of lightweight yet rigid aluminium, which is said to improve stiffness. Tata Motors claims that its new Hyperion engine delivers “a balance of power, refinement, and efficiency.” It can be paired with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
The SUV’s diesel version will use the 2.0L, 4-cylinder Kryotec diesel engine, which also powers the Harrier. This unit has an electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger (eVGT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). It is said to have a Low Friction Valve Train Architecture and Multi Drive Modes combined with Terrain Response Modes of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The Kryotec turbo engine delivers a maximum power of 168 bhp at 3,750 rpm and 350 Nm between 1,750 rpm and 2,500 rpm.
The upcoming Tata Sierra SUV EV will be based on the Acti.ev platform that’s capable of offering a range between 300 km and 600 km. This architecture also supports charging up to 11 kW with AC and 150 kW with DC fast charging. On the other hand, the Sierra petrol and diesel versions will underpin Tata’s all-new ATLAS (Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle) architecture.
