Hyundai Motor India Limited, India’s second largest automaker, has released the first official image of the next-gen Verna ahead of its global reveal on March 21. The company has already started taking bookings for the sedan at a token amount of Rs 25,000.
The new Verna will be bigger than before and come with more features. Hyundai has stated that the sedan will now sit a segment higher than the outgoing model. We take a look.
Being an all-new model, the next-gen Verna will get a completely overhauled design, sporting Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness language. Looking at the sketches, the sedan gets a split-headlight setup with an LED lightbar stretching the width of the vehicle. The Parametric front grille is wider and incorporates the LED DRLs similar to the new Tucson while the bonnet is flat with creases on both sides.
Moving to the side, one can witness the strong crease on the doors that merges neatly with the flared rear wheel arches. The overall silhouette of the new model is more fastback-like, something we have seen on likes of the Skoda Octavia.
While you cannot see the rear end of the new Verna in the Sketch, teasers revealed earlier show a full-width LED lightbar complementing the front end and a crystal-like design detail for the taillights.
Hyundai will offer two powertrain options on the next-gen Verna. The first is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol motor making 115 bhp and 145 Nm of peak torque that is being carried over from the outgoing model. The new addition is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 160 bhp with around 200 Nm of peak torque, replacing the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol option. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic for the former and a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT auto for the latter.
Both engines are RDE norms and E20 compliant that come into effect from April 2023. Hyundai however will no longer offer a diesel powertrain option with the new Verna.
Expect the new Hyundai Verna to be priced around Rs 50,000 - Rs 1 lakh more than the outgoing model’s prices of 9.64 lakh - Rs 15.72 lakh (ex-showroom). The sedan will be offered in 4 trim levels - EX, S, SX, and SX(O).
Upon launch, the next-gen Verna will compete against the likes of the Škoda Slavia, VW Virtus, the recently updated Maruti Ciaz and the upcoming facelifted Honda City.
