The electric version of the Tata Punch micro SUV was launched in the Indian market on January 17, 2024. The Tata Punch EV offers stylish design and premium interior along with a strong electric performance. It is the first Tata to be developed on the brand's new Acti.ev architecture, which will also underpin the Curvv EV.
This compact electric hatchback offers an impressive driving range and multiple charging options. Adding to it, this EV comes equipped with segment-leading comfort and convenience features. Moreover, the micro SUV comes with high-end safety features as standard. The ICE version has secured 5 star crash test rating and the same is expected with the new Punch EV.
The Punch EV comes loaded with several segment-leading features such as all LED lighting system and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The cabin is packed with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless connectivity, a 10.25-inch digital instrument console, ventilated front seats, an electric sunroof, automatic AC, air purifier and others. It also gets a 360-degree surround view camera and blind spot view monitor.
The Punch EV is built on the brand's new Acti.ev architecture, which is a comprehensively re-engineered version of the original ICE platform. The Punch EV has better looks than the already good looking Punch petrol. This EV has received maximum changes to the front fascia. It now features a blanked out front grille that houses a charging port in the centre.
Customers can open the charging port flap via the release button on the centre console or by using the key fob. All Tata EVs now have an LED strip running across the bonnet that is also offered on the Punch EV. It has a split headlamp setup with the main unit positioned on the lower bumper. The lower bumper also houses a broader air intake and a faux skid plate.
The side profile looks similar to the Punch petrol, as it features the same pillar-mounted rear door handle and a prominent cladding. The Punch.ev rides on 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The lower variants get 15-inch wheels. At the back, the small EV gets heavily sculpted tailgate, wrap-around LED tail-lights, and dual-tone bumper with faux skid plates. The PUNCH.EV lettering is boldly placed on the tailgate.
In terms of proportions, the new Punch electric is 3,857mm long, 1,742mm wide and 1,633mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,445mm. The small EV has a ground clearance of 190mm. Despite being compact in size, this electric SUV offers a boot space of 366-litres.
The Tata Punch EV comes with a feature-loaded and premium looking interior. It gets a layered dashboard finished in black and beige scheme with piano black finish around centre console and on steering. It features an all-black touch panel to control multiple operations including air conditioning. However, the touch-sensitive buttons are now well-defined and could be irritating for drivers. It has the rotary drive controller, which is slow to respond.
The dashboard is dominated by two 10.25-inch touchscreens for infotainment & driver's display. The touchscreen infotainment unit has Arcade-ev suite of 17 applications including Amazon, games, OTT streaming and others. It is also compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The digital instrument console is configurable and shows several information including navigation, info from connected phone and driving details. The feature-list include a 360-degree surround view camera, blind-spot monitoring, leatherette seats, ventilated seats, electronic parking brake with auto hold, wireless phone charging, and auto wipers.
For safety and security, the new Tata Punch.ev has 6 airbags, electronic stability program (ESP), ABS with EBD, hill hold assist, ISOFIX, iTPMS (Intelligent Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and rear parking sensors as standard.
The Smart+ variant gets prismatic IRVM and camera based reverse park assist. The Adventure variant has sequential front side indicators, front LED fog lamps with cornering functions, hill descent control, all-4 disc brakes, hill hold control and electronic parking brake with auto hold. The Adventure LR variant gets auto headlamps and rain sensing wipers. The top-spec Empowered trim gets rear wiper & auto defogger, auto dimming IRVM and automatic headlamps.
The compact EV is offered in 20 variants and in total of two battery pack options. The Tata Punch EV is available at a starting price of Rs 999000, which goes up to Rs 1429000 for the top-end variant. Prices are ex-showroom, pan India.
The new Tata Punch EV is available in two battery pack options - a 25kWh and a 35kWh. Both models are offered with front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. The entry-level model with 25kWb battery pack offers 80.4bhp and 114Nm of torque. Two driving modes are available - City and Sport. It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph in 13.5 seconds.
The Punch EV with a bigger battery pack comes with a more powerful front-axle mounted electric motor. It is rated at 120.6bhp and offers a peak torque of 190Nm. This model offers 3 drive modes - Eco, City and Sport. It is claimed to offer 0-100kmph acceleration in 9.5 seconds.
The Tata Punch EV also comes with a multi-mode regenerative braking system. It comes with multiple charging options including a 3.3 kW AC wall box, a 7.2 kW AC Wall Box and DC Fast charger. Using DC Fast charger, the 25kWh and 35kWh battery packs can achieve 10% to 80% charging in just 56 minutes. The batteries can be fully charged using a 7.2kW AC fast charger in 5 hours.
The Punch electric with smaller battery pack is claimed to offer a range of 315km (MIDC cycle) on a single charge. The bigger battery option offers a rang of up to 421km on a single charge.
The Tata Punch EV is positioned between the Tiago EV and the Nexon EV in the brand's EV line-up. It is directly positioned against the Citroen eC3. However, the Punch electric could impact the sales of Tata Tigor EV and the entry-level Nexon EV.
