Over the last couple of years, BMW has widened its product portfolio with the inclusion of many body types. Out of those, one specific version that we hear very often is the GT. Built on a sedan version, the Grand Tourer (GT) or better known as Gran Turismo is defined as a car that is targeted to achieve performance and comfort over long distances. For people who love travelling in the lap for luxury, there is the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. To further dwell into the experience of both city and highway driving, we recently got behind the wheel of the updated 6GT to denote its real character.
For us, each BMW is special for the way that it appeals to the naked eye and the 6 GT is no exception. Though looks can be subjective, for us the front-end design was the major highlight of the vehicle. Its long muscular hood clubbed with updated laser headlamps featuring blue accents, the traditional kidney grille, M-sport kit equipped front bumper catering to aggressive air damps put together a really aggressive look.
Further complementing the feel are the 19-inch alloy wheels, M-badges on either side, a sloping roofline and flared wheel arches. In comparison to the front and the side profile, the rear end of this machine looks a bit ugly. With its high boot line and a rather sliced off tailgate, the design elements out here do not go down that well in relation to the rest of the exterior design. On the whole, apart from the rear the rest of the vehicle is very attractive to look at.
Hop in and instantly a typical BMW cabin will greet you with its dual-tone interior. Though this has become a common site among all German cars, this one in particular feels very premium and airy due to its brown and black colour combination. Blending in well are the dual 12.3-inch screens available on the dashboard in the form of an instrument cluster and the other one that serves as a multimedia touchscreen. Both screens offer brilliant resolution and work well to disseminate essential information. As for the infotainment system, it comes updated with BMW’s iDrive which is very intuitive and easy to use.
Additional equipment like wireless Apple CarPlay is a delight to have on-board. Its wooden and silver inserts further help in adding character but what really stands out is the level of comfort that this car has to offer. The front seats are humungous and comfortable thereby providing ample head, shoulder and legroom. This aspect is further amplified when you jump into the backseat. With an extended wheelbase of more than three metres, there is extra room for your legs which is a boon for both city and highway commute. Complementing it, the shoulder and headroom is also great which enhances the overall experience. Thrown into the package is a panoramic sunroof that makes the interior look bright and pleasant. All in one, this is a nice place to be in while being on the move.

With its rather large dimensions, BMW offers the 6 GT with 3 engine options. These include a 2.0-litre petrol, 2.0-litre diesel and 3.0-litre diesel units. Out of these, the one which we got to sample was the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol in the form of 630i. The powerhouse delivers a maximum power output of 255 bhp with 400 Nm of peak torque. In terms of performance, the unit is a delight to drive both within the city and on the highway thereby providing good levels of refinement. Fitting in well, is the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission that hands out quick and seamless shifts much to the liking for a driver like us. What really takes the on-board experience to the next level is the presence of the adaptive air suspension. This feature offers four different driving modes namely Eco, Pro, Comfort and Sport. In our opinion, the Comfort and Sport modes are the best suited for this model that allows both the driver and its occupants to have an enjoyable cruising experience. Further, the suspension weighs in well to soak in potholes and broken roads with utter ease. Handling is one area where the GT does not fare that well in comparison to the other departments. This is due to its increased weight and larger dimensions. That said, the machine is a gem when it comes to performance.
The Grand Turismo would appeal to some while others might totally despise it. In the beginning we were a bit sceptical about the BMW 6 GT but having spent a decent amount of time behind the wheel, one thing is for certain with time it grows on you. Despite large propositions, its feature loaded interior, great driving dynamics and uber comfort lend the 6 GT a special place in the heart. It’s true character really comes out when driven on open stretches where luxury and comfort provide the right mix to attract many consumers towards it. Therefore, if you are an individual who does both city and highway commute on a regular basis then the BMW 6 GT is just the right car for you.
