Jaguar is a brand that can be associated with cars only. This car maker has an impressive history and it is famous for its stylish designs and high-performing engines. The Jaguar Cars are manufactured in Britain. In this case, let us go on a timeline of Jaguar’s history from the year it was established in 1922 to the year 2024. The First Three Decades (1922 - 1950s) Jaguar started in 1922 but was not known as Jaguar at the beginning. It was originally established under the name of Swallow Sidecar Company, which built sidecars for motorcycles. It was only in 1935 that they began the production of cars under the brand name SS Jaguar. What can be said about their early models is that they were beautiful and fast. In the Second World War, the company suspended the production of cars and concentrated on war efforts. In 1945, they decided to remove the abbreviation “SS” from their name and henceforth were known as Jaguar. This also meant the start of a fresh era for the brand. Arrival Of The Iconic XK Series (1950s - 1960s) The XK series was introduced by Jaguar in the 1950s. The first models, which were produced starting from 1948, were the XK120 models which were defined by their speed and a very elegant design. It was succeeded by the XK140 and XK150 which further developed the brand’s reputation for performance and elegance. Jaguars of this period also include the E-Type that was launched in the year 1961. The E-Type was a true icon; it was beautiful and it was engineered to be as good as it looked. Almost instantly it became the embodiment of the sixties sports car. Expansion and Innovation (1970s - 1980s) The accelerated growth of Jaguar came during the 1970s and the 1980s. In 1968, Jaguar was merged with BMC to form the British Leyland Motor Corporation Limited. This period also saw the introduction of models such as the XJ6, a luxury sedan that was known for its comfort and performance on the road. Jaguar also continued to develop their technology during this time as well. They brought in new changes and innovations that assisted them in staying relevant in the market of luxury cars. New Ownership And Modernisation (1990s - 2000s) The nineties were also marked by significant changes for the brand. Jaguar was bought over by the Ford Motor Company in 1989 and this led to new investments and introduction of new technologies. Jaguar introduced several new models under the era of Ford’s ownership such as the XK8 and X-Type and remained to be identified with luxury and performance. Ford sold off Jaguar Land Rover to Tata Motors in the year 2008. This was a breakthrough era for the brand. Tata Motors brought a lot of money into Jaguar and this resulted in new models and technologies being produced. The Electric Future The last decade and the current one have been a period of change for Jaguar with an emphasis on electric cars. The brand launched the I-PACE in 2018 which is the first all-electric car of the company. The I-PACE has been appreciated for its performance (395 bhp/ 700 Nm), design and range and it can be seen as a step towards the future of Jaguar’s electric vehicles. Jaguar has not rested on its oars but has strived to bring in new products with sustainability and enhanced technology. Looking to the future and up to 2024, Jaguar plans to continue the development of electric and hybrid cars to become the leader in the environmental segment. It also plans to go all-electric by 2025. What Next? Jaguar’s history is a story of evolution from the company’s start in 1922 to the present day. It has always been associated with style, performance, and luxury and it will remain that way. The company is committed to creating the future of driving with new technologies and the sustainable development of Jaguar. Read Also: Top 10 Most Expensive Cars in India and Their Features
In collaboration with Chery Automobile, Jaguar Land Rover is set to relaunch the Freelander as a made-in-China electric vehicle. However, this time around a series of EVs will be launched under the ‘Freelander’ name. Once launched, the Freelander range of four-wheelers will compete with Chinese domestic brands like BYD and Great Wall Motor. The Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque are a result of the 12-year-old joint venture. Initially domestic, the products will be exported globally “over time”. “[The new line of electric cars will be] independent from both Chery’s existing portfolio and JLR’s modern luxury House of Brands,” JLR said in a statement. Apart from EVs, CJLR will continue to manufacture a mix of ICE vehicles. The companies have not revealed the starting timeline for Freelander’s production. In ICE format, the Freelander SUV was available from 1997 to 2015, only to be replaced by Discovery Sport in 2016. JLR will make a 60% shift to EVs by 2030 under the ‘Reimagine’ strategy. As for JLR’s India plans, the local assembly of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will begin soon. Also read - Audi Facelifts e-tron GTs, 912 Hp GT Performance Its Most Potent Yet
Following its recent announcement to rebrand Jaguar Land Rover, the automaker has now revealed the new official logo. JLR stated that the new logo embodies "elegance, modernity and the company’s forward-thinking essence". JLR: New Logo The new JLR logo is relatively simple with a minimalist design. It is also the first time the company has had a single logo. However, the brand confirmed that the new identity will not be on any of their models, instead appearing only on the brand’s revamped dealerships and website. During the new logo unveil, JLR stated that the "Land Rover brand will remain a key part of the company’s DNA". While earlier reports suggested that the new logo will be used for the cars as well, the automaker confirmed that it will still use the signature oval badge on its models. JLR Chief Creative Office Gerry McGovern stated that the Land Rover badge will become a “trust mark” for the Defender, Range Rover and Discovery brands. A trust mark is a logo that appears on official documentation, helping to reassure the customer about the brand’s quality. McGovern added, “The reality is Range Rover is a brand and so is Defender. Customers say they own a Range Rover. In luxury, you need absolute clarity. Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography doesn’t give it. We love Land Rover, but there isn't as much equity as Range Rover, and Defender is increasing massively.” Read Also: Upcoming Car Launches in June 2023 JLR: Jaguar Gets Renewed Emphasis While Land Rover will still produce ICE-powered vehicles, its sister brand Jaguar is transitioning into a pure-electric luxury car maker. Jaguar CEO Adrian Mardell stated this is something “very personal” and “unfinished business” for him. He also said, “The Jaguar of 32 years ago is where we’re going back to and the right place for us to be." JLR: Order Backlog To Reduce Soon JLR currently has a record 200,000 order backlog. More than 75% of the orders are for the new Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and the Land Rover Defender. Adrian Mardell said that this has started to reduce, with JLR building stronger and deeper relationships with chip manufacturers. He also stated that the future supply of chips is now secured, and will start deliveries soon. Read Also: Next-Gen Porsche Panamera to be Unveiled by Q4 2023
