Most of the automakers in India are now focusing on SUVs and premium cars. However, few brands including Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors are still banking on their hatchbacks to drive sales in the fast growing Indian market. In fact, MSIL has confirmed that it will continue to introduce small cars including hatchbacks. While a long list of new SUVs will be launched in the next few months, two new hatchbacks will be launched in May 2024.
Maruti Suzuki will introduce the much-awaited new-gen Swift hatchback in the first half of May 2024. On the other hand, Tata Motors will launch the long-awaited Altroz Racer edition. Not just Swift, MSIL is also developing an electric hatchback which will take a couple of years before entering the Indian market.
The new-gen Swift hatchback will be based on the modified HEARTECT platform, which also underpins the Baleno and the Fronx. Suzuki has already launched the new Swift in Japan and Europe, and the Japanese-spec model has received a 4-star crash test rating in Japan NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). The hatchback retains the original silhouette; however, design elements are completely new. The major changes are made to the interior, which is now shared with the Baleno & Fronx. It will have a large 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with smartphone connectivity, auto AC, semi-digital instrument console, a multi-functional steering wheel and others.
The Japanese-spec model also comes with ADAS tech; however, the India-spec model is not likely to get these advanced safety features. It will have 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist and others. The biggest change will be made under the hood. The new Swift will be powered by a new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder, Z-Series petrol engine that produces 82bhp and 108Nm of torque. The mild hybrid version comes with a DC synchronous motor, which offers an additional power and torque outputs of 3.1bhp and 60Nm, respectively. Transmission choices could include a 5-speed manual, a CVT and an AMT.
Tata Motors had showcased the Altroz Racer, a sportier version of the hatchback at the Bharat Mobility Show. Set to rival the Hyundai i20 N Line, the Tata Altroz Racer is most likely to go on sale in May 2024; however, Tata Motors is yet to make an official announcement on the same. On the outside, the sportier hatchback gets a dual-tone paint scheme along with twin racing stripes on the bonnet and roof, and 'Racer' badging on the front fenders. It comes with a sportier front grille and newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels.
Inside the cabin, the new Altroz Racer will have a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree surround view camera, a HUD and an electric sunroof. The hatchback could receive new leatherette upholstery with contrasting stitching & Racer insignia embossed on the seats. For safety, the hatchback could offer 6 airbags and ESC as standard. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder, turbo petrol engine that produces 120hp and 170Nm of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox driving the power to the front wheels will come as standard.
Bookings for Mahindra BE 6 start on February 14, 2025. Deliveries starting in March with the starting price Rs. 18.90 lakh. Charger is available at extra cost.
