Jeep India has revealed its most awaited 7-seater SUV, the Meridian, with bookings expected to start from May 2022.
Finally, the wait is over; Jeep India has showcased its most talked-about SUV – the Meridian in flesh.
Developed specifically for the Indian market with up to 82 percent localisation, the Jeep Meridian goes up against the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster and other full-size SUVs. Here is a quick download of everything to know about the Meridian.
The Meridian is a large SUV in all directions and features a silhouette that mixes the smaller Jeep Compass and the larger Grand Cherokee with its upright stance. Measuring 4,769 mm in length, 1,859 mm in width and 1,682 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,794, the Meridian is 365 mm longer, 41 mm wider, 42 mm taller and features an extra 158 mm wheelbase than the Compass to accommodate the extra row of seating. The Jeep Meridian has the shortest turning radius of 5.7 metres despite its large size.
Key highlights of the exterior design include Jeep’s traditional seven slat grille, LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, LED fog lamps, a muscular front bumper, body cladding and roof rails. At the rear, the large SUV features horizontally placed LED tail lights and an integrated roof spoiler. From the side, one can visualise the large glass area of the Meridian along with prominent trapezoidal wheel arches that house new 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels with painted gloss black elements. On the inside, the Meridian features a black and emperador brown themed cabin that houses a large 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and a 10.25-inch fully digital TFT driver’s display. The central infotainment screen comes paired with 9 high-definition speakers by Alpine, providing a premium sound experience. This SUV come equipped with standard fitments like automatic climate control, automatic headlamp, rain-sensing wipers, wireless charging, a powered tailgate, 8-way power-operated & ventilated front seats, and ambient lighting. A new addition to Jeep’s interior is an auxiliary AC vent for the second and third row of seats that help to cool the cabin quickly with its dual-zone air conditioning system. To help with easy ingress and egress, Jeep has equipped the rear doors of the Meridian with specially designed hinges that offer up to 80 degrees of opening. In addition, the second and third-row seats recline to 29 and 32 degrees to provide a comfortable in-cabin experience. To provide a sophisticated ride experience the SUV comes fitted with a specifically designed and tuned suspension that features hydraulic rebound stopper and frequency selective damping.
Unlike its 5-seater counterpart (Jeep Compass), the Meridian at the launch will only come equipped with a 2.0-litre Fiat sourced multi-Jet diesel engine that delivers a power of 170 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. This engine will be available with a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission. It will be offered in both the FWD and AWD setup, providing sufficient off-roading ability. With the lowest centre of gravity in its segment, the four-wheeler according to the American automaker is capable of completing the 0-100 kmph sprint in under 11 seconds and has a top speed of 198 kmph. During the reveal, the company also hinted towards a petrol variant launch which is on the cards towards a later date.
Like all Jeep models, the Meridian has more than 60 safety features. These include six airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), TPMS, electronic parking brake with auto hold, ISOFIX mounts, traction control, rear parking sensor with a 360-degree camera and more. The hardcore SUV also gets multiple terrain modes like sand, mud and snow. While not much information was shared about ADAS, we expect the SUV to come equipped with added equipment like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist at launch.
