As electric mobility solutions gain popularity in India, automakers are rolling out affordable EVs to attract a wide audience. If you are out in the market for buying a budget-friendly electric car under Rs 10 lakh, there are some promising options including the MG Comet EV, Tata Tiago EV and Tata Punch EV. Let’s check whether these EVs are worth buying and if they make sense for your requirements.
The MG Comet EV is one of the most affordable electric cars we have in India. Currently, its prices start from Rs 7 lakh for the base variant and go up to Rs 9.84 lakh (all, ex-showroom). The compact SUV is available with a 17.3kWh battery pack and a single electric motor, producing power worth 42 bhp and 110 Nm of torque. The e-motor transmits power to the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox. The battery pack is IPS67-rated for water and dust resistance. MG claims that the Comet EV offers an ARAI-certified range of 230km. With the EV, you get a 3.3kW onboard charger that can fully juice up its battery in 7 hours.
The interior of the Comet is well-equipped with two 10.25-inch screens (one for the infotainment and one for the instrument functionalities), steering mounted controls, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over 55 connected features, keyless entry, steering mounted controls manual AC controls, front passenger seat with a one-touch tumble and fold feature, rear seats with a 50:50 split, a rotary drive selector, ABS and EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system, dual front airbags, and more.
The MG Comet EV has its own niche segment. Even when it’s compared with the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3, it proves to be an affordable deal.

The Tata Tiago EV is certainly one of the budget-friendly options for buyers. The model lineup comes in four variants – XE MR, XT MR, XT LR and XZ+ Tech Lux LR – priced at Rs 7.99 lakh, Rs 8.99 lakh, Rs 10.14 lakh and Rs 11.14 lakh, respectively. The XE MT and XT MR are the two variants under Rs 10 lakh, using a 19.2kWh battery pack with an electric motor. This setup offers a claimed power of 61 bhp and 110 Nm of torque. The Tiago EV offers a MIDC range of 223km. It can be charged with an AC home charger (0 to 100 percent) and DC fast charger (10-80 percent) in 6.9 hours and 58 minutes, respectively.
The Tiago EV XE and XT variants offer features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, steering mounted controls, 4 speakers audio system, speed sensing volume, electrically adjustable ORMVs, 12V front power outlet, central locking, a digital instrument cluster height adjustable driver seat, auto AC, rear parking sensors, speed sensing auto door locks, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear passenger sensors, etc.

The Punch EV lineup is currently available in 20 variants, priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 14.44 lakh. Only its base variant costs under Rs 10 lakh, while the rest go above the Rs 10 lakh slab. Based on the Acti.ev platform, the Tata Punch EV comes with two battery options – a 25kWh offering a MIDC range of 315km and a 35kWh battery offering 421km of MIDC range. This compact electric SUV is available with three charging options – a 3.3kW wall box charger, a 7.2kW fast charger and a 50kW DC fast charger. Its smaller battery version offers a maximum power of 82 bhp and 114 Nm of torque, while the bigger battery model delivers 122 bhp and 190 Nm. The Long Range variant accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 9.5 seconds, and the Medium Range does 0 to 100kmph in 13.5 seconds.
The standard feature kit of the Punch EV consists of the LED headlamps, DRLs, 15-inch steel wheels with cover, height adjustable driver’s seat, cooled glove box, powered tailgate release, multi-mode regen, air purifier, 6 airbags, electronic stability program, hill start assist, Isofix anchors, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear parking sensors, front power windows and drive modes (City and Sport). Features such as ventilated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, blind spot monitor, leatherette seats, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, leather wrapped steering and several other features are reserved for the higher trims.
