India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
BMW is all set to introduce its first all-electric sedan i4 in India on April 28, which will most likely go on sale around the month of May 2022.
The German luxury automaker had announced plans to launch the i4 all-electric sedan during the launch of BMW iX back in December last year. Now according to a couple of media reports, it is expected that the electric sedan will be introduced on the 28th of this month. This will be the 2nd all-electric offering from BMW.
BMW i4 electric sedan is the battery-powered version of the brand’s 4 series. The low slung sedan is underpinned by BMW’s CLAR platform which is a flexible architecture allowing it to accommodate ICE, Plug-in Hybrid EV and Pure EV. The platform is specially developed for the transition period between ICE and EV, to cut down on production costs.
The BMW i4 will be powered by an 83.9kWH battery made up of three modules with 12 cells each and four 72 cells modules, offering a range of 590 kilometres. The battery pack possesses a 200KW charging capacity, with a claimed 10 percent to 80 percent charging time of 31 minutes.
On the outside, the design of the i4 looks familiar to the current BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe four-door. Its front fascia features the BMW’s classic kidney grille, slightly modified to adhere to its EV identity with an active air flap at the bottom. The electric sedan gets a new set of alloy wheels, which are designed for a better aerodynamic drag coefficient. It is worth noting that BMW claims a drag coefficient as low as 0.25 for the M50 trim. The overall design speaks of its electric vibes with blue inserts on body panels. The pillars are slim accompanied by frameless doors and a coupe-style floating roofline. While the rear features split type LED tail lights extending to the sides and a bumper finished in dual-tone colour with gloss black accents.
Coming to the interiors, the BMW i4 will provide a single piece curved dual screen with a 12.3 inch and a 14.6-inch display that are slightly angled towards the driver. It comes with the 8th version of BMW iDrive technology with Level 2 and 3 Autonomous Driving Technology. The car will come loaded with all the modern day equipment like powered front seats with ventilation, 3 zone climate control and more.
The i4 comes with two powertrain options, the eDrive40 and the M50 xDrive. The eDrive40 trim is most likely to debut in India, which produces 350 bhp and 430 Nm of peak torque. The more powerful M50 xDrive uses the same battery pack but produces a higher power output of 544 bhp and 795 Nm of torque, with a 0-100 kmph acceleration in 3.9 seconds.
In India, the BMW i4 will not face any direct competition. If priced aggressively, it can outsell the more expensive Audi e-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan, with a better range as well as a greater price to value proposition.
