Due to the festive season, the month of September saw car manufacturers roll out attractive discounts and offers to car buyers. However, did that increase car sales? Find out in our report as they release their September sales data.
India's largest carmaker Maruti registered sales of 144,962 cars in September, a fall of 3.8% compared to the same period in 2023. Maruti Utility Vehicle range, which consists of the Fronx, Brezza, XL6, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Invicto and Jimny, has seen marginal growth. Commercial vehicles saw a sales decline of 3.2 per cent.
On a year-on-year basis (YoY), Tata saw a sales decline of 8% with 41,063 units sold in September 2024. In September 2023, the Indian brand has sold 44,809 four-wheelers. Commercial vehicles also maintained a negative outlook witnessing a 23% decline in sales.
“The PV industry in Q2 FY25 saw more than 5% decline in retails (Vahan registrations) compared to Q2 FY24 driven by slow consumer demand and seasonal factors. In contrast, industry offtake was significantly higher than registrations in anticipation of a strong start to the festive season, resulting in a continued buildup of channel stock. In addition, Electric Vehicle sales in personal segment were affected by the lapse of registration and road tax waivers in key states. Fleet EV sales continued to remain impacted due to lapse of FAME II and non-inclusion of the fleet segment in PM-eDRIVE scheme,” Tata Motors PV MD Shailesh Chandra said.
With 23,523 units sold last month, Kia witnessed a growth of 14%. In comparison to the same period last year, Kia had sold 20,022 vehicles. In its India lineup, the Kia Sonet remained to be the best-seller. The SUV competes against the Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon in the segment.
Senior Head of Sales and Marketing Hardeep Singh Brar stated, “Our continuous exceptional sales performance is driven by the overwhelming response from customers during the festive season of Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam. This success is a testament to the unparalleled customer experience our team consistently delivers. We have also prioritized expanding our touchpoints, ensuring that our best-in-class mobility solutions are accessible to all our customers across the country. As we move into the festival period, our refreshed product line 2 newly introduced Gravity trims will provide much-needed impetus for high festival sales.”
Japanese car manufacturer Toyota continued its positive sales streak by selling 26,847 units in September 2024 as compared to 23,590 units sold during September 2023. This translates to a 14% increase in sales on a YoY basis.
“As the festive fervour picks up footfalls and enquiries are charged up which makes us positive of a very good festive season. Notably, our SUV, MPV, and small car segments have experienced significant growth nationwide, contributing over 90% to our sales in the month of September,” VP Sales and Service (used car business) Sabari Manohar said.
In September 2024, Mahindra sold 51,062 SUVs, compared to 41,267 sold during the same period last year. Cars like the Scorpio N and XUV700 were the top sellers for the homegrown brand, while the newly launched Thar Roxx is expected to further the sales. Bookings for the Roxx will start on October 3.
JSW MG Motor India sold a total of 4,588 vehicles last month, as compared to 5,003 units in September 2023. On a year-on-year basis, MG registered a negative 8% growth. Notably, 49% of sales came from electric vehicles (EVs), which include the Comet and ZS EV. The MG Windsor EV launched with the battery rental scheme will boost the EV agenda of the company.
